in tribute: peter williams

Peter Williams, motorcycle racer and innovator has died at the age of 81. Williams came from an earlier generation to most of us who ride Practical Sportsbikes era motorcycles, but we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. He pioneered many features we now take for granted: cast wheels, disc brakes, perimeter frames, and the importance of mass centralisation were popularised by his vision and tenacity. Williams excelled as a racer in the 1960s and ‘70s – the era of Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood and Phil Read, all of whom he beat at some point, invariably riding machinery which on paper was inferior to that of his works-backed rivals. Although he never had a factory ride in the top-flight of Grands Prix – Williams famously talked himself out of a Grand Prix…

YAMAHA XJ750R OU28 The past is a great source of inspiration for specials, especially rare factory race bikes. This beauty is one of Yamaha’s earliest attempts at a Suzuka 8-Hour racer, which Shinichi Ueno and Hiroyuki Kawasaki took to fourth in the 1984 event. Designated the OU28 it predates the FZ750 by a year and is powered by a highly-modified motor from the fairly unspectacular (in road trim) XJ750 Seca, in a full prototype chassis. You could use a FZ600 (or Japanese market FZ400) as a start point for a rep, given the similarities. But we know of a rep currently midbuild, with a custom frame to take an FJ1200 motor and modern running gear: see it in PS, soon. “doing a little bit of work on the barrels”

I thought it was worth sending you the attached photo of the project I took on as soon as the second lockdown was announced. I think it’s best described as a ‘parallel twin,’ though it’s since been replaced by a ‘single. For once, the cold weather was a good thing, since these aren’t great if they get too warm. They do have a tendency to ‘leak’ despite (or perhaps because of) my best efforts, and those of a a few friends – they’ve both run dry. Since the photo was taken, another one has gone, and I’m about to start work on the fourth. I think that’s pretty good going, given that each ‘cylinder’ has a capacity of around 40,000cc.
