The first question people invariably ask when I tell them I have two children—twins, in fact—is: Boys or girls? For the last three years, no matter who’s asking the question or how many people are around to hear the answer, my response has been: “Sophia and Olivia were assigned female at birth, and today Sophia identifies as female, Olivia as nonbinary.” Then I add, for clarity: “Olivia’s pronouns are they/them.” It’s the difficult answer. But loving someone means doing the work to understand, then pushing that knowledge out into the world.
