The Santa Fe is Hyundai’s new flagship seven-seat SUV. Bigger than the old car, it has a roomy, practical interior. Towing-friendly features such as self-levelling suspension and Trailer Stability Assist are standard. There’s just one engine, a development of the 2.2-litre diesel that powered the old model. Model tested 1.5 EcoBlue 125PS AWD ST-Line Price £23,950 Kerbweight 1520kg Towing ability Take a look at the spec, and at first the EcoSport looks like a promising small tow car. It has a strong diesel engine, four-wheel drive and a 1520kg kerbweight. That makes this by far the heaviest model in the EcoSport range, with an 85% match figure of 1292kg. However, look further down the spec sheet and you’ll come across the disappointing towing limit of just 1100kg. That rules out the EcoSport for anything other than a very light caravan. Meet the dealers Downtide Caravans & Leisure Downtide is adding Compass to its range this season, the first time the Norfolk dealership has taken on a new British franchise. The company only started selling new caravans three years ago, when Adria approached it. According to Henry West, who runs the firm with brother David, that hugely increased the dealers’ prestige. “The vans we started getting in part-exchange were better quality than before,” he says. The company started 50 years ago as a marine business, and only sold caravans it got in part-exchange for boats. Farewell to tourers NEW FOREST CAMPSITE Sandy Balls, a hugely popular holiday destination for generations, is closing its gates to tourers. The holiday village will focus on statics as part of a £10m investment in the site. Since Away Resorts bought Sandy Balls in 2016, it has invested £2m in central facilities, including a pool, gym, spa and restaurant. Its touring field makes way for 108 static holiday homes this winter, with the opening date of the development yet to be confirmed. Augustin Trébuchon (pictured below) was the last French soldier to be killed during the Great War. Trébuchon, who came from the small French-Ardennes village of Vrigne-Meuse, and his regiment reached the Ardennes on 8 November 1918, when the Germans were slowly retreating following their failed August offensive. Marking the centenary, a memorial honouring Trébuchon will be unveiled close to where he fell. There will also be a memorial trail that can be followed by boat, bicycle, and on foot. Stamps, bottles of Champagne and beer have featured his image during the year. WE HAD PACKED our T-shirts, sandals, suncream and sunglasses, as well as some thermal underwear, wet weather gear and boots. We were off to do the North Coast 500 and were prepared for everything! Hillcroft Park is set in the beautiful surroundings of the Ullswater Valley, at the north end of the lake ENGLAND’S SECOND LONGEST, third deepest and, some say, most beautiful lake is just a short walk from the North West’s Top 100 Regional Winner. When you are touring around the most beautiful lake in England, you really should go by boat. From the site, it’s a 15-minute walk to the Ullswater ‘Steamers’ pier. The setting is great, with the mountains getting higher as you leave Pooley Bridge and head to Howtown, then Glenridding. My boat going out, the Lady Wakefield, was built in 1949. Inside was a bar serving refreshments, but I stayed on deck to get the best views and photographs. If you’re a walker, this is a great way to access trails in the national park. I had lunch in Glenridding, which at one time was important for lead and silver mining. BAILEY IS WORKING with a group of dealerships to bring out factory-fitted special editions of its caravans for the first time in more than 20 years. In recent times, only a handful of dealers have brought out dealer specials – and all of these vans have been adapted by the dealers themselves. For the 2019 season, however, Bailey has lined up with 10 dealers across the country, each of whom will be producing their own dealer special, based on the new Bailey Phoenix (see panel, right). A FEW YEARS ago, a change in the law meant that conventional cars could tow 8ft-wide caravans. Among the first manufacturers to introduce wider vans were Buccaneer, Elddis/Compass, and Lunar, with its Alaria range. Swift responded in early 2018 with the Super Sprite and then, for 2019, the Swift Grande. Bailey joined in with the new Pegasus range, all 8ft wide and including our 2019 Tourer of the Year, the Grande Messina. First drive Volkswagen Touareg VOLKSWAGEN HAS A new flagship, in the imposing form of the Touareg SUV. Now bigger and roomier, and packed with high-tech gadgets, will it make a fine tow car? All the signs are good. For the time being, buyers can choose between two diesels, one with 231PS (228bhp) and one with 286PS (282bhp). There’s a petrol on the way, and VW has also developed a plug-in hybrid, although there’s no date set for its arrival. Either diesel should be up to the job of towing any sensibly matched caravan. “SO WHAT’S THE point of them?”, “Just get a bucket and sponge, and clean the caravan!” and “Something else to take up space,” are just a few of the comments I’ve heard (and said myself) about towing covers. Several months ago, we happened to be towing in the filthy weather that the Beast from the East brought in and, arriving at our site in York, the caravan was plastered with dirty slush from top to bottom. Meet the dealers Exeter Caravan Centre This family dealer was set up by caravan enthusiasts Deran and Karen Stephenson in 2004. Initially, it sold many brands, including Avondale, Fleetwood and Lunar. But following the crash of 2008, the firm retrenched. It only sold used models until last year, when it took on the Venus. In the intervening period they moved to premises that used to be a static caravan site, with wide access. The site includes a one-bay workshop and accessory shop. Ben Stephenson, the couple’s son, says that family businesses have clear advantages. “When people come to see us, they don’t have to see anyone new,” he says. DARN IT! THE bloomin’ clocks have gone back. It’s now dark just after lunch. But at least the milking farmers are happy evacuating udders in twilight, as opposed to the pitch dark. Good friends of mine are dairy farmers. They’re up at 4am for most of the year. Has anyone ever asked them whether it would make a blind bit of difference if we just left things as they were when it came to resetting the clocks? And if we’re creating a particular time zone just for farmers, why stop at that profession? Why not have a time zone that suits painters and decorators, or car mechanics? Why just jobs? Hobby factory expands Hobby has nearly completed the building work at its new production hall on its main site in Rendsburg, north Germany. Costing 1.2m euros, the new hall sits alongside the existing structure and will serve, among other functions, as a reception area for front and rear panels that can be stored at the correct temperature before being used. Kabe and Coachman Swedish caravan manufacturer Kabe, which last year made an unsuccessful bid to buy Adria, has taken a 20% stake in Coachman caravans. MANY CARAVANS NOW have a TV antenna installed as standard and for those that don’t, adding one is a great DIY project. Many antennas pre-date the analogue/digital switch-over back in 2012 and are still going strong, which prompts the questions, “Are TV antennas worth upgrading?” and “What should I look for when buying a new TV aerial?” Like so many technical elements these days, antennas come in a variety of shapes and sizes. LUNAR’S LEXON RANGE, when launched in 1995, was an early 7ft 6in wide tourer that went almost unnoticed and was restricted to just a few models. Now, that width has become the norm, and the Lexon has rather lost its selling point. But slotting between the Quasar and Clubman ranges, it offered the best of both worlds, being spacious and lightweight. We found a rather fine example of a 2014 Lexon 540 on the forecourt at Yorkshire Coast Caravans.
