What’s in a name? That depends on what your name is, don’t you think? And on fashions and culture and the passage of time. Take mine. A ‘Karen’ is now a thing. Online, she’s a meme, and it isn’t flattering! She’s the kind of middle-aged woman who loudly demands to see the manager and has the junior shop assistant in tears. Ouch. Does it put me off the name my parents gave me? No, of course not. But will new mums be queuing up to bring a new generation of bubba Karens into the world? Not likely! So there’s definite power in a name. Just ask the bloodthirsty bunch of murderers in our new series on p36. From A to Z, over our next few bumper issues, we’ll be charting some of…

swimming with sharks

Craning my neck, I peered over my son’s shoulder. We’d been on holiday and were eager to see the printed photos from his underwater camera. Keelan was a water-baby. He’d been swimming since the age of three and had spent most of our holiday to Egypt as a six-year-old submarine! Suddenly now, he stopped, and wide-eyed, held up a photo. I scrutinised the picture… and gave a start. ‘Oh my God,’ I spluttered. Keelan had taken some photos beneath the surface and lurking in the distance was a… shark! ‘Did you know it was there?’ I asked. He shook his head, laughing. The grey reef shark wasn’t big but, ‘Good job he wasn’t hungry that day,’ I teased Keelan. As I’d split from his dad, Gary Wilson, when Keelan was three – it was just me and him at home. Something…

shark bait

The post-mortem revealed that Keelan had been stabbed 43 times. He’d tried to fight off his attackers. They’d set upon him like a pack of animals. Police told us Keelan had tried to get into a taxi with a friend of his when his killers had turned up at 11pm. They’d dragged him out of the cab as he tried to escape them. His friend was unharmed. So they went for my son deliberately? Why? Because he’d left, didn’t want to be around these gangs? Because he wanted to do something with his life, not wallow in whatever petty grievances these boys were into? We buried Keelan two-and-a-half months later. I stood up, choking with sobs, to talk about our adventures in Egypt… Dubai… the sharks... Four months after Keelan had died, in the September, his baby sister Ren* was born. ‘Your big…

last chance saloon

The bottles were laid out on the side. ‘And you know where the milk is,’ I said to my husband, Ant. ‘Of course,’ he chuckled. ‘Now just go out and have a nice time.’ It was my 23rd birthday and I was going out for a Chinese with my friend, Aubrey. With two young children – Logan, two, and one-year-old Hailey – it was rare that I let my hair down. ‘I won’t be late,’ I said, kissing Ant goodbye. ‘Don’t you want a coat?’ he said. It was December 2005, and the temperatures were Baltic in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where we lived. ‘Nah, I’ll only be in the car and restaurant,’ I said. There, we ordered some rice and noodles. ‘And I’ll have a cocktail,’ I grinned. I wasn’t a big drinker, but what the hey? I had another one afterwards. ‘No…
