I’M A bit of a Johnny-come-lately in the grand scheme of Street Machine’s proud history. I’ve been a reader since the mid-90s, but I didn’t get involved as a contributor until 2008. I became a full-time staffer in 2017 and only scored the editor’s gig last year, so I’m very fortunate to have been tasked with assembling Street Machine’s bumper 40th-anniversary issue a few months back, and now this – SM’s 400th issue! They’re two significant milestones that the mag happened to reach in quick succession, and it’s important to acknowledge them, because SM and its readers have always been particularly conscious of our scene’s heritage. Exactly which issue of the magazine marks our 400th is somewhat contentious, as SM evolved from Van Wheels magazine. To arrive at 400, we started counting…

going, going, gone!

IN 2007, Queenslander Darryl Mattingley made headlines when he purchased a Track Red 1971 Phase III GTHO for $680,000. At the time, this was the highest price paid for an Australian muscle car on the open market, and the sale paved the way for not only the $1 million prices we have seen for exceptional GTHOs since, but arguably the wider muscle car market as a whole. WHAT MAKES THIS GTHO SO VALUABLE IS ITS LOW MILEAGE – JUST 25,449 MILES – AND ITS STUNNING, UNRESTORED CONDITION Mattingley passed away in 2017, and now the GTHO and at least two other cars from his collection are being offered for auction by Shannons as part of its 40th Anniversary Timed Online Auction, 23-30 November. The GTHO wears special-order orange stripes instead of the usual…

fightback

AMERICAN car enthusiasts have taken up a battle against the nation’s Environmental Protection Agency to secure the future of the modified car scene. They claim the EPA is trying to ban any form of modified street or race car by imposing exorbitant fines for those selling aftermarket parts that alter a vehicle’s emissions. The bunfight goes back to a November 2020 study from the EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, which claimed 550,000 diesel trucks had their pollution controls removed or modified over a 10-year period – leading to 570,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxides and 5000 tonnes of particulate matter entering the atmosphere. The findings of that study led the EPA to launch the ‘National Compliance Initiative: Stopping Aftermarket Defeat Devices for Vehicles and Engines’, using powers granted to it under…

AN ALLIGATOR USED TO SHADE ITSELF BESIDE THE CHEVELLE. WHEN THE CAR WAS TAKEN AWAY, THE GATOR SMASHED THE SHELTER WALL TO PIECES! WHEN Paul Soklev popped up in the Street Machine inbox with this killer Chevelle and an equally cool back-story, we had to know more, so we hit him up for a chat. How did you end up with this Chevelle? I bought it off a dear friend of mine. One of my other mates was going to the States, and he told him, “If you see something of decency over there, can you buy me a car?” So he went over and saw this ’70 Chevelle at a car show in California and gave the owner an offer he pretty much couldn’t refuse. It ended up coming back here and…
