One’s places of ESCAPE have to be chosen WISELY There aren’t too many earthly experiences that compare with a high-summer cruise to the popular historic harbours of the world. They can be evocative, picturesque places to visit but it’s sometimes a compromise for captains, crew and guests in terms of facilities and access. Despite the planet getting ever-more connected, it’s also getting more crowded, and that means one’s places of escape have to be chosen wisely. In this issue we’ve been focusing on recent developments in superyachting hubs, the new spots that are opening up the cruising world – some are reinventions of traditional locations, others involve the imaginative breaking of new ground. You can read all about them from page 32. We’ve also been on board Mondomarine’s 50-metre Ipanema, a boldly…

The CASCADING geometrical shape of the forward deck overhangs really CATCH the eye AMADEA Lürssen’s 106-metre delivered The stunning 106-metre Lürssen Amadea , which began life as Project Mistral and launched last summer, has been delivered to her new owner. She is shown at the end of March on passage down the Kiel Canal, after which she headed north along the Norwegian coast before rounding Scotland and cruising down the Irish Sea. Espen Øino’s exterior styling is particularly striking, with the cascading geometrical shape of the forward deck overhangs catching the eye. The foredeck is dominated by a helipad. Aft on the main deck is a large pool, which has been covered for passage-making. Further details remain thin on the ground, and even the LOA of 106 metres is a best guesstimate. Rich and fierce, and with an athletic poise, the astonishing red-hulled 50-metre Ipanema, launched by Mondomarine last year, occupies the water with the confidence of an enormous floating Ferrari. And what a red that hull colour is! Not a cloudy burgundy of some understated elegance if a little dullness; it’s a brash, screaming, high-gloss scarlett. Once you’ve recovered from the endearing shock of the exterior, a whole new world of enigma awaits inside. You’d expect something that matched the contemporary flair of the exterior with a calculated coolness, something masculine and mechanical perhaps. What you get is an eclectic mix of the traditional and modern that brazenly nods to so many art and design styles. It’s a bold approach - as bold as the yacht’s exterior styling - and it gives…

RED FROG MARINA PANAMA Location Red Frog is located in the beautiful area known as Bocas del Torro on the Caribbean side of Panama, and the marina is about a day’s cruising north of the Panama Canal. Red Frog Marina is managed by IGY Marinas, which brings with it the security and service we’re used to seeing from IGY properties. "Every captain we’ve sent down there just wants to stay! It’s totally different,” says Bert Fowles, vice-president of marketing for IGY Marinas. "Interestingly, Red Frog Marina is a top destination for owner use of the vessel, not just as a place for chartering or stopping off in the yacht’s downtime. Our guests are often owners who actively seek us out and want to stay with us. The marina caters for yachts up to…

“The spirit of PASSION and INNOVATION is the driving force behind this EXTRAORDINARY team” ULYSSE-NARDIN America’s Cup support One of the wing-sailed catamarans lining up in the sparkling waters of Bermuda’s Great Sound this May for the final qualifiers of the 35th America’s Cup will be sporting a distinctive and wholly apposite anchor symbol on its deep-blue hulls. It is the logo of Ulysse-Nardin, the Swiss watchmaker that two years ago became a partner of the Swedish team Artemis Racing as it prepares to contest the oldest trophy in international sport. Ulysse-Nardin has been producing high-quality, prestige timepieces since 1846, ratcheting up more than 4,000 awards for its mechanical watches and numerous patents. Its coveted marine deck chronometers, first designed by the entrepreneurial young Ulysse Nardin, have equipped over 50 national navies, including Japan…
