CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF (WHERE YOU GREW UP, WHERE YOU LIVE, ETC..) AND WHAT YOUR BACKGROUND HAS BEEN PRIOR TO STAND UP? I grew up on the Sunshine Coast and prior to SUPing I played rugby, did sprint kayaking, lifesaving and lifeguarding. I have spent the last five years studying engineering and science in Canberra, Brisbane, Denmark and Vietnam and since graduating at the end of 2020 have been travelling NSW. HOW DID YOU GET INTRODUCED TO SUP? WHEN DID YOU START DOING STAND UP? WHY? I started really getting into SUP surfing after trying some Jimmy Lewis boards in Vietnam in March 2020. Due to COVID I had to come back home and after buying a JL I found my home beach break way more accessible, which is normally…

sup surfing state titles

Divisions for the event included Open, Over 40, Over 50, Over 60, Under 18 in SUP Surfing, as well as Open and Over 50 in 10ft SUP Longboard divisions. Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson was to see the best in the state battle it out for qualification into the National Titles. “This event showcases the incredible talent that we have in Victoria. We will have a true Victorian winter pattern with some cold winds but looking like some great conditions for the Sunday. Good luck to all competitors!” Surf Forecasting sites are calling for possible strong south west winds on Saturday and a large swell impacting the coast before winds switch offshore with the swell moderating on Sunday, in what is shaping up for an epic day. With wintery 2 foot conditions on…

great barrier island to auckland wing foiling

New Zealander Sam Thom had been the first person to attempt the gruelling 11 hour down wind SUP from Great Barrier Island to Auckland 110km away long before wingfoiling was invented. After spending a few years learning to wingfoil, Sam was keen on another downwind adventure and started making plans with professional sailor Phil Robertson to be the first to the attempt the same downwind trip on a wingfoil. On the 23rd of February this year, the conditions were looking perfect, with a 12-18 knot NE wind and 1.5m swell, and the call was made the night before that the wingfoiling attempt was on. Sponsoring the trip was Jon Bilger from PredictWind.com, who supplied support boat, Sam’s father Murray was handling catering, Haley Thom, Sam’s sister was helping out cameraman Glenn…

gold coast 10ft classic

Wow, what a weekend! If you were one of the SUP surf crazed fans who lined Palm Beach, you must certainly agree. Where to begin… The winners of the 2021 SUSinc Gold Coast 10ft Classic were decided over two days in solid conditions on the Gold Coast. Competitors were welcomed with a strong 4-6ft ESE swell with a near Indo quality period of 14 seconds. The epic conditions continued over both days providing a perfect canvas for some fantastic top to bottom surfing and some toes on the nose! The beach vibe was all time with surfy tunes, perfect sunny days and of course some home baking from the Club’s Secretary, Emma Morley. A total of six divisions and a novelty nose riding event were completed over the two days with over 40 competitors…

carsten kurmis…

There is probably no better way to start into a weekend. It’s Friday and my friend Andy Klotz called me to tell me that there should be windy conditions tomorrow just nearby on my home spot 'Ammersee'. Well that sounds perfect, because I just got my new Freewing air shipped. Can’t wait to give it a try on my hyper foil 7`2 and the S-type foil. The tricky thing about this lake is the very unstable wind conditions and short waves. For that reason it is good to have a little more volume in your board. Otherwise you don’t come back when the wind drops. The lake is located between Munich and the alps. That gives you a short drive from the city and a beautiful few to the mountains of the…

circumnavigating maui e komo mai - welcome

Within minutes the wind changed from a light cooling 4 knots breeze into a 20-knot full on head wind. It went from an easy and beautiful paddle to a major struggle to make any headway at all. We were paddling on the back side of Maui. A rough coast-line full of lava and no beaches or even water exits. The Haleakala volcano back drop was spectacular, lush green slopes with deep cut out gulches where water has been running down for centuries. You could see clearly where the last lava had flowed down into the water. After Covid had restricted Zane and I of travelling and exploring the world, it felt exhilarating to go out there again and do something challenging. Realizing how beautiful our ‘back yard’ is, made this…
