the power of golf can make a happy new year

An hour ago, Boris Johnson was on TV telling us that most of England’s south-east – including Peterborough, where I live and TG is created – was going into a Tier 4 lockdown. My first reaction wasn’t about Christmas – our family had already taken the decision not to see each other this year. No, my first reaction was whether golf would remain open. After an hour or so, the answer was a huge relief. The game has always been important to me; I didn’t quite realise how important though until it was taken away. If golf hadn’t been exempt from this latest curb – especially with time off over Christmas – it would have been a miserable end to the year. Golf in 2020 has been about seeing real people instead of…

walking on water

How would you fancy your chances of sinking a hole-in-one from a wobbly tee in the middle of a lake? That was the unique challenge facing Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Matt Kuchar, Matt Fitzpatrick, Alex Noren and Cheyenne Woods at the Team Troon Challenge in Las Vegas (where else?) as they had to overcome motion sickness – and the fear of falling in – to take part in a chase the ace challenge. After taking a short boat trip out to a floating tee box, each player had one ball from 145 yards to win $1 million for charity. Sadly, no splashes of an accidental or celebratory kind were made, but Justin Thomas did win the Team Troon Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge and $10,000 for the charity of his choice.…

michael jordan’s private playground

If you watched the Last Dance docuseries, you’ll know Michael Jordan is utterly obsessed with golf and being the best, so it should come as no surprise that his new-ish Florida golf course, The Grove XXIII, is better than most when it comes to customer service and flashy perks. Aside from being invite-only and having fewer than 100 members, it blends technology and social distancing by delivering drinks and snacks to patrons via drone drop offs. Caddies even get their own scooters so they can race ahead of golfers in buggies and set-up shots. Jealous, us? A FREE LESSON WITH A MAJOR CHAMP Who wouldn’t want to be coached by a Ryder Cup captain? Padraig Harrington excelled as a part-time golf coach during lockdown and now he’s bringing his popular instruction series…

around the clubs

You’ve got mail How do you raise funds in the middle of a pandemic? Start a postal delivery service. For the 13th year in a row, members at Cupar Golf Club in Fife, Scotland, delivered thousands of Christmas cards around the local area. In exchange, users of the service were invited to make a donation of 30p per card with all proceeds going towards the golf club. The initiative helped raise around £750. Sharing the Christmas spirit More than 220 Foxhills members raised around £25,000 for those who needed it most over Christmas after donating their missed month’s membership subscription in November to local food banks in Surrey. The club also played their part by donating £5,000 to provide Christmas hampers to the Children with Special Needs charity in Cobham, while the country’s…

your questions answered!

How should you proceed if you accidentally hit the ball more than once during a single stroke? Anonymous Under the old rules (prior to 2019), a double hit used to count as two strokes. But just as there is no longer a penalty if a player’s ball accidentally deflects off his or her body, equipment or caddie, there is now no penalty when a player accidentally strikes his or her own ball more than once in making a stroke. Just play the ball as it lies and try to forget about the embarrassment. Is there a penalty for keeping a hand warmer in the same pocket as my golf ball? Archie Clarke, email Although a hand warmer is technically an artificial device, you can use it during your round to warm your hands, but not…
