women’s golf goes from strength to strength

I’m fortunate that I’ve witnessed many pro swings up close over the years, from the effortless grace of Ernie Els and Rory McIlroy to the sheer brute force of long drive guys like Joe Miller. But one that really stands out didn’t smash it 320 on the fly - it was the ultra-consistent, rhythmical action of Annika Sorenstam. We were at a Callaway event in Orlando, and mic’ed-up Annika was swatting a new driver down the range. I was astonished by her consistency. Every swing exactly the same. Every ball flight exactly the same. Every yardage exactly the same. She wasn’t smashing it over the fence at the back - I recall they were going about 250 yards. But she never missed a target. She never over-exerted herself. You could see…

golfing utopia?

With two golf courses, a Peter Cowen Golf Academy and the only floodlit 18 holes in the region, it’s crazy to think that the home of the Dubai Desert Classic and Dubai Ladies Classic could get any better. But that’s the reality after the opening of the first Topgolf venue in the Middle East last month. Spread across three floors that cover 60,000 square feet, the new entertainment venue at the Emirates Golf Club has 96 hitting bays, 10 multi-coloured targets and more than 300 digital screens, some of them as large as cinema screens. The entire facility can accommodate a whopping 1,100 visitors and includes a nine-hole mini golf course, as well as three restaurants and bars, a shop and, eventually, live music. There are even three VIP suites, each equipped with…

can the world’s biggest hitter make it on tour?

With an ability to swing a golf club at more than 150mph and produce ball speeds over 230mph, Kyle Berkshire has the power to pick apart par 5s with ease and make Bryson DeChambeau look like a short-hitter on the PGA Tour. If you read our interview with him in October, you’ll already know he’s a World Long Drive champion and the longest hitter on the planet, but you may not know he is about to turn his attention to a new pursuit. Well, an old pursuit. With the world of long drive facing an uncertain future, the former junior and college golfer is giving it all up (at least temporarily) in an attempt to join the professional golf ranks, just like Jamie Sadlowski did before him. The only difference is that…

berkshire’s blueprint for pga tour success

Rather than using a 48-inch driver typically favoured in long drive contests, Berkshire plans on putting a 45-inch Callaway Epic 21 in the bag. As well as trying to put more backspin on the ball to tighten his dispersion, Berkshire is working with Callaway on a 2-iron that he can hit further than most PGA Tour pros hit their drivers. Berkshire has spent approximately 80 percent of his practice time in recent months fine-tuning his short game. Even taking something off his tee shots, Berkshire has been swinging at around 140mph in practice rounds. By comparison, DeChambeau leads the PGA Tour at 133.59mph, nearly 20 faster than the Tour average. Berkshire is reuniting with renowned sports psychologist Dr Bob Rotella, whom he worked with as a junior.…

around the clubs

Romance isn’t dead Forget hiding engagement rings in cakes. Ian Marshall nailed the perfect marriage proposal to fellow golf newbie Julie Anderton after planting the ring inside the 9th hole during their round at Sudbrook Moor in Lincolnshire. We’re just glad she didn’t pick up on that hole before reaching the pin! Golfers dig deep for fire fund More than £20,000 has been raised to help rebuild Swanston Golf Academy in Edinburgh after an arson attack on New Year’s Eve left 170 juniors and many more members with no place to practise. The global golf community has rallied round to support Swanston Golf Club as it appears their insurance will only cover “a partial amount” of the cost. Mike McNally and Peter Arnott, two of the coaches based at the academy, have since…
