the most challenging test we’ve ever done

For more than 30 years, TG has been testing golf clubs. I bought my first driver, irons and putter based on TG reviews, like hundreds of thousands of golfers over the years. When we had video calls (as you now do) to plan this issue towards the end of last year, we discussed how the hell we’d be able to test all the new clubs of 2021, given the restrictions in place. It would have been very easy to say we couldn’t do it. “Courses are closed!” “Manufacturers can’t get us the gear!” “There’s a pandemic!” But we didn’t. Equipment Editor Simon Daddow moved mountains to make it happen, and the result is in this issue. A lot of people deserve thanks for creating Top Gear this year. Firstly, Simon, whose living room…

cleeve hill finally saved!

A six-month fight to save Cleeve Hill Golf Club in Gloucestershire has been successful - and they’ve got many of you to thank for that. We reported last year how the hilltop municipal course was set for closure at the end of March after Tewkesbury Borough Council decided to terminate the club’s lease over fears that it was not financially sustainable without major investment. The announcement sparked a social media frenzy and a ‘Save Cleeve Hill’ campaign which drew support from thousands of golfers all around the world. Several parties including Sir Nick Faldo expressed an interest in taking over the Top 100 venue, which ultimately forced the civic chiefs into a U-turn. A council report read: “It has been recognised that there is still a significant appetite for golf on the…

england golf’s handicap u-turn

Golfers who are not members of a golf club in England may be able to obtain a handicap as early as this summer – despite fears over cheating and devaluing golf club memberships. We reported late last year how England Golf had abandoned plans to mirror Scottish Golf in acting as a virtual golf club and offering a handicap in exchange for a Netflix-style subscription. But after pressure from the R&A to offer every golfer a handicap, England Golf have now agreed to administer a national platform to connect independent golfers and “signpost a clear route to golf club membership”. The platform may even be ready to launch as early as this summer. Jeremy Tomlinson, CEO of England Golf, has suggested that pay-per-play golfers will pay around £40 a year in return…

around the clubs

GROWING THE GAME IN GLASGOW The R&A have unveiled plans to construct a community golf facility in Glasgow which aims to make golf more welcoming for people of all ages and backgrounds. The project will see the existing public course at Lethamhill redeveloped to create a family-focused venue featuring a nine-hole course, par 3 course, short-game area, adventure golf and floodlit driving range. Additional features include a cafe, fitness studio, indoor simulator, movie theatre and retail area. If the planning application is successful, it is hoped the centre will open in the summer of 2022. INCREDIBLE FEET! A nine-hole golf course in Finland has been turned into a stunning ephemeral artwork using nothing more than rope, snowshoes and thousands of footprints. Designed by amateur artist Janne Pyykko, a series of geometric patterns were…

reputations matter in golf

Patrick Reed can’t stay away from controversy. In fact, he seems to revel in it. But his latest in-your-face victory was overshadowed by a questionable drop during the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open which led to allegations of cheating (again!) and players calling for the PGA Tour to take action. Reed insisted he had done nothing wrong – and even used an almost identical incident involving Rory McIlroy in the same round to try to defend himself. But there was and is a big difference. Reed has previous while no one is calling Rory’s character into question. The Northern Irishman still has credit in the bank for giving himself a worse lie than he needed to while replacing his ball during last year’s US PGA Championship. “I’ve never tried…
