what do you want to do now golf is back?

Well, here we are again! Chomping at the bit to get out on the course after three months away from the game (unless you’re a lucky Scot). As the vaccine roll-out seems to be working, we’re all hoping this was the final lockdown and – as the clocks go forward and spring arrives – we can all start playing regularly again. One thing this enforced break has done is make me set a few goals for golf’s return; nothing grand like winning the club championship or getting down to scratch. Just a handful of things I really want to do, such as... Play more often. At least once a week; after five months out, but still paying for a full membership, it seems the least I should do. Enter more comps. I…

HOME OF GOLF’S TIGER TRIBUTE We’ve seen plenty of Tiger tributes since his horrific car crash, but none as impressive as this stunning piece of art, featuring the famous ‘TW’ logo, which was carved into the sands of St Andrews the day after the accident. The mural is the handiwork of American caddie Robert Ogle III, who previously worked for Nike and has been using the beach next to the Old Course in Scotland as a canvas for various pieces of sand art since the pandemic hit. Incredibly, Ogle only needed an hour and two rakes to complete his latest project, which ranks as his favourite creation to date. We can’t wait to see what he does to mark the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews next year!…

fight to save a colt classic

Join the fight to save one of the best muni courses in Derbyshire which permanently closed at the end of last year and has been abandoned ever since. Allestree Park – one of only three Harry Colt-designed munis in the UK – was decommissioned by the local council as a result of “operating significantly below capacity” prior to the pandemic, creating an “unsustainable deficit on a consistent basis”. Despite four bids to run Allestree Park, none were considered viable by the council. They even backtracked on plans to keep the 18-hole course in a playable condition up until April this year in a bid to attract further bids. “The golf course hasn’t been maintained since November,” Andrew Picken, a former member, told TG. “The council claimed a saving of £69,000 in a…

around the clubs

Grim’s Dyke aids vaccine rollout Grim’s Dyke in Middlesex is helping the fight against Covid-19 after turning its clubhouse into an NHS vaccination centre. Four members of the club’s staff have even been doing shifts while on furlough, and several of its 470 members have volunteered to assist across the four vaccination stations on site. The reopening of the clubhouse for members won’t interfere with the rollout either, since one side of the building can be blocked off and used for access to the vaccine centre. Bonkers bunker challenge Of all the charity challenges you could attempt, taking a dip in a temporary water hazard at your local course is probably the most unusual. But that’s exactly what Yvonne Keeling, the lady captain of North Berwick, did in -6°C temperatures to raise money…

how to prepare for matchplay

Not knowing your handicap could have big consequences. If a player begins a match having declared a higher handicap than they are entitled to and does not correct this before the opponent makes his or her next stroke, the player is disqualified if this affects the number of strokes the player would give or receive. If it does not, there is no penalty. However, if you declare a handicap which is too low, there is no penalty but you must play off that lower handicap. Even more reason to get to grips with the new World Handicap System… Make sure you arrive at the first tee in plenty of time. If a player turns up late, but within five minutes of their start time, they lose the hole. If they arrive…
