a passion to play golf can overcome the odds

Do you remember what hooked you into golf? For me it was the local pitch-and-putt; just a wedge and a putter, scorecard in hand. There were plenty of sevens and eights in the first few months, but the satisfaction of knocking a battered old ball onto a freshly-mown green 70 yards away was compelling. Scores in the 50s (it was a par-36, 12-holer) turned into 40s, then one day it was in the 30s. Golf had me. That desire to play and compete, whether it’s at the local pitch-and-putt or on the PGA Tour, is something every keen golfer shares. But in this issue we’ve spoken to six people whose passion for the game could not be dimmed, despite monumental challenges (see page 46). Sophia Popov (below) tells us how she could…

ticket ballot goes live for 150th open

We might be getting a little bit ahead of ourselves here, especially as Royal St George’s hasn’t even hosted this year’s Open yet, but there’s little time to waste if you want to attend The 150th Open at St Andrews, from July 10-17 next year. For the first time ever, a ticket ballot has been made available exclusively to members of The Open Club – a free-to-join membership programme – from now until October 4, 2021. Adult ticket prices start from £95 on Championship days and range from £20 to £50 on practice days, while weekly tickets have been discontinued to ensure as many people as possible can attend the event. Free tickets will remain available for kids, and those aged 16 to 24 will be able to buy tickets at half…

not a member? get your handicap here

Society and charity golf days are about to get a whole lot fairer. England Golf have finally confirmed that non-members will be able to obtain an official handicap by early July. The ‘Independent Golfer’ scheme will cost subscribers £40 per year in exchange for an official handicap, plus personal liability insurance and access to the My England Golf app to post scores and track indexes. The only caveat is that anyone who has left a golf club within the last six months will not be eligible to subscribe. The new subscription model effectively replicates the OpenPlay scheme which has just been introduced in Scotland to allow non-members to obtain and maintain a World Handicap Index for £5.99 a month. England Golf told us that county and national events will remain open to golf…

‘at least i didn’t finish last in open qualifying’

When did you first get into golf? Golf has always been a part of my life. My father was a golf pro in his younger days in the Manchester area, his clubs were always in the garage and they held a certain mystique for me. I started playing through chipping and putting in the garden… and that was where my love of golf began. Are you a member anywhere? When I won the World Championship, Wellingborough GC made me a honorary life member; it’s a lovely place to go back to and holds some special memories, including playing 54 holes a day with my best mates. That was my life between 17 and 19… brilliant days! I’m now based in Dublin and ended up settling for Powerscourt, a 36-hole venue with great facilities. I…

Stoke Park to shut for two years Stoke Park Country Club in Buckinghamshire is set to close for two years later this summer after a £57 million takeover by Indian tycoon, Mukesh Ambani. The venue, which featured as a backdrop in Goldfinger, is scheduled to shut its doors on August 2, 2021, with the 27-hole course and estate following suit on October 18. It is expected to reopen in the summer of 2023 following a “major reinvestment” aimed at “future proofing” the business. Spurs to finally win something? Tottenham Hotspur are set to take over the lease of Whitewebbs Park Golf Course in North London, which has controversially not reopened following the most recent lockdown. According to Enfield Council, the 18-hole parkland course has run at a loss of more than £1.1 million…
