five minutes of your time could save a life

A few years ago, I arrived at my old club and saw that the flag was flying at half-mast. “What’s happened?” I asked the pro. “A member died on Thursday, on the 13th tee, cardiac arrest.” Every year 100,000 people in the UK die from a cardiac arrest and, given the average age of most golfers, their sex (cardiac arrests are more common in men) and the long walk involved, far too many happen on the golf course. That’s why David Sullivan spent over 10 weeks walking 1,100 miles from the top to the bottom of the UK to raise awareness of the issue – and train an estimated 30,000 people in CPR. “I had one very close friend who died on a golf course after a cardiac arrest, and I wanted to…

open return for portush

Northern Ireland won’t have to wait another 68 years for The Open to return – The R&A has confirmed the 153rd Championship will be heading back to Royal Portrush on the Antrim coast for a third time, in 2025. The 2019 event, won by Shane Lowry, generated more than £100 million for the economy of Northern Ireland, with 237,750 fans packing the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush – a record for a Championship staged outside of St Andrews. The last time a venue outside St Andrews hosted the Open again so quickly was Royal St George’s, in 1981 and then again four years later. “We see huge potential for Royal Portrush to continue to develop and enhance its status, and perhaps achieve the same iconic status for golfers throughout Northern Ireland as St…

Apple and Samsung Galaxy watches have just got a lot better. Arccos Caddie users can now download a free app which tracks all your shots without having to carry a smartphone in your pocket. The new Arccos Caddie app has been optimised for use with Apple Watch 6 and SE models, as well as the Galaxy Watch4 Series, and includes caddie club recommendations, plus other in-round insights and post-round strokes gained data. In 2020, the average new Arccos member improved their handicap by 5.02 strokes, which suggests it’s a pretty effective tool to have!…

bryson’s biggest challenge yet

Say what you want about Bryson DeChambeau (though you may get in trouble with the PGA Tour if you do), but he never shies away from a challenge. He’s gone to great lengths (literally) to transform his swing, packing on 40lb of muscle and producing ball speeds approaching 200mph. Statistically, he is the longest driver on the PGA Tour – and has been for the last two seasons. But if you’ve ever wondered how Bryson would fare in a long-drive contest against Kyle Berkshire and Co, we’re about to find out. A day after the Ryder Cup finishes, the 28-year-old will make history when he becomes the highest-ranked player ever to compete in the Professional Long Drivers Association World Championship in Nevada. Not since Rory Sabbatini tried his luck in the same…
