Vintage Rock Sept/Oct 2018

VINTAGE ROCK celebrates a time when music changed the world - 45s, youth culture and the odd thrusting pelvis. Vintage Rock chronicles all the stellar artists and music, the enduring legacy of those early pioneers - and why it’s still the best way to live. Spanning the dawn of the 50s to early Beatles (pre Eastern mysticism!), Vintage Rock covers a time of Mods and Rockers, crinoline skirts and blue jeans, rock star movies and screaming-girl concerts. This special magazine rejoices in the music and verve of Elvis, The Shadows, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent and a host more, and speaks to a contemporary audience that relishes the vitality and flair of the era.

welcome …

Depending on where in the world you are reading this edition of Vintage Rock, you’ll be looking at one of two different covers. In our UK homeland, we have the ‘British Elvis’, Billy Fury… …For international readers, we have The Beach Boys. (Both features are in all editions: it’s just the covers that have changed!) Billy Fury remains a cult hero in some ways, even in the UK. Although his debut album The Sound Of Fury is considered by many to be the greatest British rock’n’roll album ever, Fury failed to fully capitalise on his early success and songwriting skills – despite his Beatles-beating haul of hits! – but we make no apologies for revisiting the singer’s career in detail. From a marvellous insight feature by Billy’s biographer Spencer Leigh, through…

oh, boy!

The guitar is one of several replicas of the Gibson J-45 acoustic on which Buddy wrote many of his songs, which the Foundation has presented on loan to artists ranging from Marty Wilde to Bob Dylan as a way of keeping Holly’s legacy alive – and promoting the work of the foundation in the field of musical education. Each guitar contains a fret from Buddy’s guitar and is sleeved in a leather case, based on Holly’s original, customised with the name of one of his songs. Gracie received the I’m Gonna Love You Too guitar. “I‘m honoured to become an ambassador for the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation,” said Gracie, 82, who is best known for the hits Butterfly and Fabulous, as well as for his instrumental prowess on Guitar Boogie. “Although…

a night for lonnie donegan

It’s been 14 years since the ‘Rock Island Line’ memorial concert for Lonnie Donegan way back in 2004, but there’s another tribute to the late ‘King of Skiffle’ and ‘Godfather of British Rock’n’Roll’ coming up in September. ‘A Night For Lonnie Donegan’ takes place at London’s Union Chapel on 3 September, and boasts a superb lineup. Billy Bragg – whose latest hit book Roots Radicals And Rockers: How Skiffle Changed The World has been a huge seller – is playing, as well as Ralph McTell, Chas & Dave, The Jive Aces, Chas McDevitt, Chris Difford, Vince Eager, Deborah Bonham, and also Nora Guthrie – daughter of seminal American folk writer, Woody Guthrie, whose songs provided Lonnie with several hits. The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra will also perform, and the backing band…

wanda jackson’s jett set

The legendary Wanda Jackson is back in Nashville working on a new album, which is currently anticipated for a 2019 release. Her producer this time is none other than Joan Jett. There’ll be original songs too – Jackson has been co-writing with Nashville songwriters including Angaleena Presley of the Pistol Annies, Ex’s And Oh’s singer Elle King is contributing a song, and four-time Grammy-winning producer Vance Powell is also onboard. Powell also assisted on Jackson’s 2011 acclaimed collaboration project with Jack White, The Party Ain’t Over, which peaked at No. 17 in the US’s Top Rock Albums charts. “The songs on this project are very dear to my heart, as a lot of them are based on my own life experiences,” says Wanda. “I’m really looking forward to sharing what Joan…

new memorial for eddie

A new memorial stone will be unveiled on 30 September, at the site where Eddie Cochran was fatally injured in a car crash near Chippenham in Wiltshire. The stone – a tiered design with ‘three steps to heaven’ – replaces the damaged one at the site, and has been organised and fan-funded by Facebook group The Eddie Cochran Memorial Project. The day before the unveiling there will be an all-day tribute gig at Chippenham’s Flying Monk Tavern. On 3 October, Cochran would have turned 80 years old. He was just 21 when he died.
