CAPTAIN OF OUR HEART RECENTLY my husband had a medical appointment with a doctor in Sea Point. We were both standing at the traffic light waiting to cross the road. A gentleman approached us from the opposite side of the road, came over, looked at us and walked on. He then turned around and walked back to us. He asked, “Are you two able to cross the road on your own?” We said yes we could. Then I recognised him. I said, “Are you Morné du Plessis?” “Yes I am,” he replied. What a kind and caring person he is. I thanked him profusely. When our doctor had finished the examination I told him the story and he said, “Now you know why he was the captain of his team!” GRATEFUL, SEA POINT…

HOLD ODIE’S NAME HIGH Reading your article about the murder of Odette Barkhuizen brought tears to my eyes (YOU, 10 October). Odie, as she was often referred to, would be so proud of her son, Wade – a young man who took the witness stand with the bravery of a warrior and really made the case. Wade, it’s so sad your mom was taken away in such a brutal way. Cherish the many memories you have. You deserve far better than you got from the person who took her. In fact his apology is meaningless. Carry Odie’s name high. She’d want you to. AUNTY A, SMS SORRY STATE OF MARRIAGE It’s so sad to hear of marriages being destroyed, as often detailed in Dr Louise’s column in YOU. It’s mainly because of people’s inclinations towards having…

prospects for hope

Regarding your article about hope in South Africa (YOU, 3 October), the comments by business leader Johan van Zyl although laudable fall far short of the current political and economic situation in SA. You can’t pour cream on sour milk. International investors are bailing out of SA bonds. We may soon face junk status by Moody’s, the ratings agency. Sentiment in the manufacturing sector is at its lowest ebb in 10 years. Unemployment is running at 29%. Most municipalities are operating at a loss and many government-run enterprises are floundering in debt. Crime is basically out of control. Rather distressful also is that Zimbabwe, our close neighbour, is no longer the bread basket of Africa and is in fact politically and economically on its knees. Equally disturbing is the mindset attaching a…

in brief

Today I bought my weekly YOU and I went straight to the article on Prince Harry, Meghan and Archie in South Africa (YOU, 10 October). I was expecting four pages. I turned the page and there was more and, to my delight, I turned the page and there was more again. Wow, what a day! I’m still smiling. Thank you, my beautiful magazine. HAPPY CUSTOMER, SMS Thanks so much for the fabulous spread on the Sussexes’ trip to SA. What a spoil. DEBBIE, EMPANGENI The article about Prince Harry following his mom’s footsteps in Angola was very poignant. He was brave to do publicly something that was, for him, highly emotional. It was a good story. SUSSEX FAN, HERMANUS I’m shocked to see so many people are taking others to court because of name-calling. I’m 86…
