NZV8 No 188 January 2021

NZV8 Magazine was conceived when the passionate muscle car scene was in need of an authority. Thanks to a large population of baby boomers, muscle car and V8 culture is booming in New Zealand. NZV8 is not only riding that wave, but leading the way by providing a world class magazine that features the cars, events, like the annual Beach Hop and people that make the scene so exciting. NZV8 covers an extensive range of high-performance V8-engined vehicles. Wherever the local ground shakes to the beat of a tuned eight-cylinder machine, from a drag race meeting to a car show, NZV8 is there and bringing you all the action.

battery crazy

Whenever I’m socializing outside of the shed and electric vehicles (EVs) come up in conversation, people more often than not wrongly assume that I would be against the idea; you know, being a petrolhead and all. But in reality, I’m all for some EVs, especially in retrofits for daily drivers. Now, don’t go setting a match to the bottom of this magazine just yet — just hear me out. My dream daily is a late ’70s K5 Blazer. I’d own and be driving one right now if I could just find the right example (call me). Yes, I know it’s not the most practical daily, but I really don’t care! I don’t need it to be fast, I just want it to tow stuff and get me to and from…

scotty mac edition

On the back of his third Supercars Championship, Scotty Mac has released his very own signature Mustang, teaming up with Herrod Performance in Australia, which build special editions for Ford Australia, and it looks as if it was actually his dad who in a very Kiwi/Aussie way got the whole deal off the ground with Herrod while they were ‘hanging out’ at the race track. The SM17 special edition is more than just a Mustang GT with some fancy decals and black wheels — it’s track-tuned, having completed hundreds of laps in testing, and features adjustable sway bars and reconfigured coilovers as well as Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres in 275/35 and 305/30, sitting on 20x9.5s and 20x11s. The thing makes bonkers power too, with 775hp and 598lb·ft on tap thanks…

750hp bronco anyone?

Special vehicle builder Hennessy is already planning to build the ultimate Broncos — even before the model has hit the showrooms. Only 30 Velociraptor V8 Broncos are planned to be built. They will be based on the same premise Hennessy has found success with with the Raptor. The Velociraptor Bronco will use the same 750hp supercharged 305ci Coyote package they developed for the Raptors, as well as custom body styling, an off-road suspension package, and with very little left the way it was when departing the Ford production line, which explains the price tag of US$225K. Of the 30 being built, it seems one is already earmarked: “Over the past two years, we have built over 70 Gen 2 Ford Raptors for our customers by removing the EcoBoost V6 and…

djr doing it right

As per the cost cutting that is part of the new Gen 3 Supercar rules, it looks as if the Mustang’s road heart may finally be used in the Supercar version, which currently runs a five-litre 302 Boss–based power plant — something that was carried over from the Falcon programme. In an interview, DJR team boss Ryan Story, in a very non-committed way, stated that as part of the cost cutting the team are developing a new engine package, shifting from pushrod to overhead cam, and that the best option for this would be the Coyote. It’s reported that teams can spend upwards of $250,000 a car just on engine costs every season. It is hoped that the service life, which is currently 4000km, could be doubled — if not…

hogan book out now

The name Garth Hogan is one of legend here in New Zealand, and not only in motorsport, so it should come as no surprise a biography has now been written of his life. The book is penned by Kiwi Tim Hanna, who is responsible for the best-selling biographies on Burt Munro and John Britten, as well as bios on Bruce McLaren and motorcycle champion Kim Newcombe. Much like that illustrious group, Hogan is a man who achieved an immense amount both on and off the track during his life, from becoming the first Kiwi to run over 200mph behind the wheel of his nitro funny car, to holding the Top Fuel record for 25 years at 263, and even setting records at Bonneville that stood for 12 years. Later on,…
