WONDER WHAT “ARTS & CRAFTS” really means? It’s hard to see the connection between a shingled bungalow and Glasgow architect Mackintosh’s severe, white stuccoed houses, or between, say, William Morris’s wallpapers swirling with stylized flowers and a squat lamp base of hammered copper. WHO’s WHO OF ARTS & CRAFTS HARVEY ELLIS (1852–1904) The architect and renderer had a profound effect on Stickley’s Craftsman designs during his short tenure with the company, introducing lighter, tapered elements reflective of English and Glaswegian designers, including delicate inlays in a short-lived furniture line. DARD HUNTER TODAY lives in the house his renowned grandfather purchased in 1919. Dard Hunter Sr., a Roycroft artisan, designed everything from stained-glass windows, furniture, and jewelry to title pages for Elbert Hubbard. He wrote 20 books on the history of paper, printing eight here, at Mountain House Press. The Hunters were a prestigious Ohio family. Dard’s great-grandfather, William Henry Hunter, had been a 19th-century businessman, owner of the local news-paper and co-founder of an art pottery. Later, Dard Hunter Jr. carried on his father’s tradition in the decorative arts, working as a museum curator at Winterthur and becoming a talented cabinetmaker. Her Color in Space Dwelling Palettes allow individuals to choose palettes that not only suit their color preferences, but also make them feel comfortable. “I’ve learned to explain it like music,” she says. “The key is the signature, and everything follows from that.” Just as certain combinations of notes make music, colors must harmonize to create a comfortable environment that mimics how we feel in nature.
