me versus meditation

i suck at meditation, and as many times as I have tried it, I have quit shortly thereafter. It is the opposite of relaxing for me to sit still and try to empty my head or let my thoughts happen and acknowledge them without taking action. But in the last few months and the crazy chaos that is my life, I reconsidered the premise. “You have to sit in a comfortable position in a quiet area dedicated just to your practice,” says my yogi friend. Mmmkay. I look around the tiny living room in our rental and see Legos everywhere, a dog bed (plus dog), a 7-foot TV armoire and a faded rug covered in white dog hair. Nope. Bedroom maybe? I survey the room: giant bed, stand-up desk, file cabinet…

my obsessed-with list

YEEDI ROBOT VACUUM Most robot vacuums are like having a mini-jet zooming around the house, but this one from Yeedi has a “quiet mode,” which brings the ruckus down to the level of a running microwave. Plus, it has crazy-good suction to pick up kid debris and pet hair. $140, amazon.com FX CHOCOLATE: FOCUS Functional chocolate (that does not taste bad!) is a trend I can get behind. Fx has some really great blends, but I especially like Focus, which contains 300 milligrams of NooGandha ashwagandha to support mental clarity and cognitive performance. $20, fxchocolate.com CUSTOM SKINNY MANTRA BAR NECKLACE If there is one thing I am continually practicing, it’s patience. I’m not always good at it, which is why I chose to make “patience” one of the mantra bars on my personalized necklace from Blooming Lotus. $108,…

To stay active outside the gym, Michel avails himself of the wind and waves on…

got inflammation? go work out.

While it may seem counterintuitive, exercise can actually reduce inflammation in muscle tissue. According to research published in Science Advances, a pro-inflammatory element called interferon gamma has been associated with muscle wasting and dysfunction, but exercising can counter its effect, helping ward off chronic inflammation and protecting your body from disease. It’s important to note, however, that not all inflammation is bad: Acute inflammation is your immune system’s response to injury and infection, and is the way your body knows it has to begin tissue repair or defend against bacteria. It’s the chronic stuff you have to worry about. SIZE MATTERS Being fit and exercising do not outweigh the dangers of obesity, especially as it relates to heart health. A study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology tracked more…

Is a lack of shoulder mobility holding you back? Then you’re among millions. While it is arguably the most mobile joint in the human body, the shoulder is also the most problematic, which is no wonder considering all its moving parts. If anything is off with a bone, ligament, tendon or muscle, it could lead to instability, misalignment, impingement or even a tear. An effective shoulder protocol is crucial for athletes wanting to level up their game and boost that competitive edge. This program maximizes your shoulder stability while improving your end range of motion for 360-degree mobilization. SIDE-LYING SHOULDER ROTATION Targets: shoulder girdle, pecs, thoracic spine Lie on your side with your knees stacked and bent 90 degrees. Extend your arms straight out from your shoulders along the floor in front of you.…
