As a mom of middle schoolers, in the last year I’ve developed a special appreciation for the lengths teachers go to for the benefit of children. From developing unique interactive tools for online learners to keeping their virtual doors open for questions well beyond school hours, teachers have given so much more than conventional duty requires. And with all the pandemic-related controversy, they don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Two years ago, we decided to change that, and the Palm Beach Illustrated Education Awards was born. We are now in our third year of recognizing educators, academic programs, and outstanding institutions in Palm Beach County, and I’m thrilled to share a glimpse into our special initiative in this issue. Winds of change are blowing in West Palm Beach, particularly in Rosemary Square, where the past several years have wrought a reimagining of the neighborhood’s future. At its north end, the recently completed 360 Rosemary delivers 20 stories of Class A office space, and a 20-foot-tall art piece at its entrance grants depth. Material (SG) II was commissioned by Related Companies (related.com) from British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare to serve as the crowning touch of the tower’s outdoor plaza. The installation is part of Shonibare’s “Wind Sculpture” series, which has been exhibited around the world, from the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. to the Ndubuisi Kanu Park in Lagos. Lake Clarke Shores resident Paul Richards and his brother Dave Richards of Wellington may race “funny cars,” but their favorite pastime is no joke—with Paul as owner and Dave as driver for Paul Richards Racing, they race in the National Hot Rod Association, the governing body of drag racing. “A funny car is a vehicle that has been altered in the wheelbase and/or had the engine position moved other than the way it came off the assembly line in order to have better traction and speed on a racetrack,” Paul explains. Today’s funny cars have a chromoly chassis with a carbon-fiber body on top to resemble a production vehicle. Boca Raton resident Jorie Blake Rosen isn’t like most 10-year-olds. Spunky and ambitious, she’s a professional child actress—and now a recording artist, too. During lockdown, she didn’t just face cancelled school and extracurriculars; she lost her outlet to perform, and gigs including two films and a Broadway opportunity slipped through her fingers. Instead of letting the disruption get her down, she wrote and released her first single, “Make Your Own Music,” a catchy tune meant to inspire people to follow their dreams. The song has received more than 30,000 streams. Rosen connected her song to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida and raised $1,000 in the first week.
