THERE IS one thing that makes me feel whole, happy, at peace. I have given it a lot of thought. I have been to therapy, trying to learn—and understand—through different techniques what it is that really ‘moves’ me; what motivates and, ultimately, what makes me who—and what—I am today. And the answer to that is: flying. On a deeper level, I have come to learn that what makes me the happiest is actually being at the controls of the plane. Nothing makes me prouder of myself than piloting an aircraft, shooting an instrument approach, scoring that greaser and stopping the aircraft without my passengers feeling sick or nervous. Dear Airways, Thank you for the wonderful interview with the Iron Maiden lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson in the July 2017 issue. I started plane spotting in 1979 and had my first camera for aviation photography in 1981, almost at the same time (1982), when the best Iron Maiden album The Number of the Beast was released, which I listened from vinyl day and night during that time. Who would ever expect that the singer of a heavy metal band would be the Captain of a Boeing 747? In 2016, I was hunting the Ed Force One, but was not able to catch it in Germany, so I took a one-day trip by plane from Hamburg to Oslo/Norway on June 13, the second to the last tour stop with the 747.
