IN THIS MONTH’S issue, we celebrate two things that I hold very dearly: anything related to Pan Am and to Alitalia. The former, well, it’s what made most of us fall in love with commercial aviation. It’s what made lots of us dream and wish, one day, to become part of all the glam and flair reflected in those white and blue colors, anywhere around the world. As for the latter—I’ve said it before—what Alitalia represents means everything to me. And to see a DC-8—the aircraft that actually flew my parents back and forth between Italy and the Americas in the 1980s—working for NASA today, surely puts a big smile on my face! Dear Airways, My wife and I were intrigued with your article in the August 2017 issue, United Airlines Flight 154—A lifeline. It brought back vivid memories. In 1986, we took an identical trip from Honolulu to Guam with all the intermediate stops. There were two principal differences: Continental Air Micronesia was the carrier, flying Boeing 727M combis, and we had an extra stop at Johnston Island, a restricted military base with the same constraints as Kwajalein. We took the flight from and to Honolulu on Air Mike, as it was known locally, spending three days in Chuuk on the westward flight number CO 557, and three days in Pohnpei on the eastbound flight CO 556.
