travel smart

Where did it all go wrong? Although our immediate reaction is likely to be to declare them naive and then move on, It's hard not to feel some sympathy for travel bloggers Jolie King and Mark Firkin, who it was recently announced were arrested and detained for more than three months in Iran for alledgedly flying their drone without a licence. Yet to be released having served 'just' three months in jail also seems incredibly fortunate when you consider their fellow detainee, Melbourne University lecturer Kylie Moore-Gilbert, is facing a ten-year stretch. King and Firkin had thrown-in their jobs working in Australia, bought a 4WD, and started driving to the UK while blogging along the way and sharing videos on their Way Overland YouTube page. The duo had posted on…

Photographic moments tend to jump out at me when I least expect them. This wall for example, caught my eye whilst out and about and straight away I knew I had to capture it. Yet, at the time, I had no idea what was drawing me to it. Although I could see the geometric lines created wonderful shapes allowing for a variety of compositions, there was an underlying message I was yet to explore. I often don’t initially know what my images mean. Most of the time I start out with a plan but it’s not until much later that I realise the image was telling me what I needed to know about myself at the time. A couple of months passed after photographing the wall and I was diagnosed with a…

hit the road

It’s September 2019, and I’m in San Francisco when I get a fortune cookie with my dinner. I read it out to my group – “you will travel to many exotic places.” We all burst out laughing! To me, that is the adventure of travel, exploring new lands, people, cultures and enjoying the many new doors that open both photographically and in life. Travel photography is a very broad subject that includes just about everything away from your home base. Once you open your door and head to your transport – the adventure has begun. Travelling allows me to shoot everything from the smallest insect to the grandest landscape. But travel images still need to tell a story, perhaps more so than a simple animal image does, or a general landscape. With…
