socal fruit cart margarita

Preheat a grill to high (450°F to 500°F), or heat a grill pan over high. Grill 1 (½-in.-thick) pineapple ring (core removed), uncovered, until charred, about 2 minutes per side. Cut in half crosswise. Rub lime wedge around rim of a rocks glass. Place 1 tsp. Tajín Clásico seasoning in a shallow plate; dip rim of glass in seasoning to coat rim. Fill glass with ice. let’s go down to the beach

WHEN SUSAN AND I GOT MARRIED near Pawleys Island, South Carolina, we had our rehearsal dinner at a simple house with a long deck that led to the beach. It was a loose, breezy, informal affair, and something about the location dissolved all that wedding tension and nerves in about five minutes. The date was late May, and a predicted thunderstorm passed us by, leaving a starry night with the sound of waves crashing in the background. We served shrimp-and-grits buffet style, with mint juleps, a bluegrass band, and the usual rambling speeches. (Mine being the prime offender.) We don’t have any weddings in this issue, but we do have a few ideas for beach parties (check out page 11), and the fundamentals are the same. All you really need are…

meet lanikai

PADDLEBOARDING PUP Lanikai—Lani for short—lives in Wai-pahu, Hawai‘i, with owners Mary Standahl and Garrett Kuipers, who gave their pup her name (which means “sea heaven”) after O‘ahu’s Lani-kai Beach. “My husband really wanted a water dog,” Standahl says. “We hope she can eventually become a surfer.” So far, though, Lani prefers her role as Kuipers’s paddleboard copilot, as he navigates the calmer waters off her namesake beach. SURFER GIRL Teaching Lani to be comfortable in and on the water was a gradual process, Standahl says. When Lani was a puppy, Kuipers got a large paddleboard and put it in the living room. “We started by giving her treats when she would stand up on the board inside,” Standahl says, “and worked our way up to the ocean.” Now that Lani is a paddleboard…

it’s party season!

FOR INTERIOR DESIGNER Erika M. Powell of Urban Grace Interiors and her family, summer is all about long days on their home sands of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, that spill into dinners at dusk with friends. Erika, her husband, Chance, and their daughters, Sloane, 8, and Whitney, 5, set up their beach landing zone out of their 1977 Ford Bronco. But this isn’t just any family car—these wheels have history. It was on Florida’s Grayton Beach that the couple first met and where three years later Chance surprised Erika with a wedding proposal and the Powells’ green beach ride. “We have since shared many memories on that beach with that Bronco nearby,” says Erika. Here’s how to pull off a party like the Powells (with or without the cool vintage truck). • Pack…
