let’s go down to the beach

Porch with a view: a recent trip to Big Sur, California (SUSAN EVANS)WHEN SUSAN AND I GOT MARRIED near Pawleys Island, South Carolina, we had our rehearsal dinner at a simple house with a long deck that led to the beach. It was a loose, breezy, informal affair, and something about the location dissolved all that wedding tension and nerves in about five minutes. (Mine being the prime offender.)We don’t have any weddings in this issue, but we do have a few ideas for beach parties (check out page…

PADDLEBOARDING PUPLanikai—Lani for short—lives in Wai-pahu, Hawai‘i, with owners Mary Standahl and Garrett Kuipers, who gave their pup her name (which means “sea heaven”) after O‘ahu’s Lani-kai Beach. “My husband really wanted a water dog,” Standahl says. “We hope she can eventually become a surfer.” So far, though, Lani prefers her role as Kuipers’s paddleboard copilot, as he navigates the calmer waters off her namesake beach.SURFER GIRLTeaching Lani to be comfortable in and on the water was a gradual process, Standahl says. When Lani was a puppy, Kuipers got a large paddleboard and put it in the living room. “We started by giving her treats when she would stand up on the board inside,” Standahl says, “and worked our way up to the ocean.” Now that Lani is a paddleboard…
