food with a view

BACK IN THE DAY, you could have summed up a lot of coastal dining establishments with a simple maxim: The better the view, the worse the food. I’ve experienced this phenomenon everywhere from South Carolina to Southern California—paying a fortune for the exact same red plastic baskets of bland fried shrimp. I remember one restaurant (which shall remain nameless) where you could watch dolphins frolic in a tidal creek at sunset as you sipped a gin-and-tonic. It had the best views for miles, but the food was that deadly combination of horrendous and expensive, from mushy crab cakes ($28) to tough, tasteless swordfish ($33, on special). meet teak

BEGGING FOR THE BEACH The first time Alex and Jessica Phillips took Teak to the beach, “he took off as soon as his paws hit the sand, rolling and digging like a maniac,” Jessica says. Once he smells the ocean or sees the sand—which happens frequently at their Manhattan Beach home—the 1-year-old puppy relentlessly pulls his owners toward the shore. “Bernese are relaxed dogs in general,” Jessica says, “but he doesn’t calm down until he gets to the beach.” DOG’S WORLD Teak, who is named for his woodsy coloring, tags along with Jessica and Alex on all of their California travels, from touring Griffth Observatory and Napa Valley wineries to walking along the Palos Verdes sea cliffs and SoCal’s many dog-friendly beaches. His Manhattan Beach neighborhood rolls out the welcome mat,…

WINES FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION Career milestones. Ringing in the New Year. Even the occasional impulse buy. Some events just call for a more expensive bottle. ARNOT-ROBERTS TROUSSEAU Looking to emulate the wines of France’s Jura region, Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Roberts tracked down one of California’s few growers of Trousseau in 2009. Now they’re the de facto champions of the grape, which makes for an expressive, tangy, complex wine. $32 AUBRY LE NOMBRE D’OR CHAMPAGNE BRUT Most people are only familiar with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but there are actually seven grapes allowed in France’s most famous bubbly—every single one of which is utilized in this toasty, mineral-driven grower Champagne. $62 SCRIBE SKIN FERMENTED CHARDONNAY Think Burgundy meets Basque cider with this sultry Chardonnay that’s aged on its pressed skins for more than 100 days.…
