these are the good old days

Sometimes it’s like taking candy from a baby. I’ll receive a new gun on loan from a manufacturer, get to shoot it, put it through some drills and really develop a fondness for it. Then, just when I think that this is the gun I should be carrying regularly, I have to send it back. The painful truth is that I can’t buy every gun that I test. Part of the problem, of course, is that I like most types of handguns: single-action revolvers, double-action revolvers, DA/SA autos, 1911s, striker-fired pistols. You name it, I’ll find something I like about it. At the same time, I’ve never been hesitant about expressing my dislike of certain features. Cocking serrations at the front of a slide, extended magazine releases and pink polymer frames are all…

not standing still

It seems that no one in the gun industry is taking much time off. Companies have been continually introducing new products and updated models to their existing lines. Here are some of the best we found: 01. SMITH & WESSON MODEL 360 Smith & Wesson has added another revolver to its line of J-frame snubbies. The new five-shot Model 360 is chambered in .357 Magnum. It has a lightweight scandium alloy frame and an unfluted stainless steel cylinder, giving it a total weight of just 14.9 ounces. The Model 360 features a black finish with Flat Dark Earth (FDE) combat grips. The sights are a red ramp front with a groove rear. Web: www.Smith-wesson.com MSRP: $770 02. STEYR M9-A1 IN OD GREEN Steyr Arms is now offering its M9-A1 pistol with an OD Green frame. That…

return of the da / sa

“...MANY PISTOL SHOOTERS LIKE SA/DA SEMI-AUTO PISTOLS FOR CONCEALED CARRY.” When I first saw the new Springfield Armory XD-E at the 2017 NRA Exhibits in Atlanta, I asked, “Why?” With all the striker-fired, slim-line, single-stack 9mm concealed carry guns available today, why do we need a hammer fired double-action/single-action (DA/SA) slim-line semi-auto pistol? When I asked that question to myself, I broke my cardinal rule, never to use the word “need” when talking about firearms. As it turns out, many pistol shooters like SA/DA semi-auto pistols for concealed carry. After several weeks of carrying the XD-E and firing approximately 500 rounds, I now know why. Not everyone is a believer in the safety of carrying a striker-fired pistol without a traditional safety, and some were trained on a service weapon that had a…

field stripping the springfield xd-e

There is no need to drop this pistol’s hammer to field strip it. To field strip the XD-E, pointing the gun in a safe direction, first remove the magazine, and then lock the slide back and make sure that the chamber is empty. With the slide still locked to the rear, rotate the forward takedown lever clockwise 90 degrees to the vertical position. Next, release the slide lock while maintaining control of the slide and move it forward off of the frame. To disassemble the slide, turn it over, slightly compress the recoil spring and remove it, being careful to maintain control. Remove the barrel by lifting it up and sliding it to the rear. It is now ready to clean and lubricate.…

options for carrying the xd-e

Springfield Armory has done an excellent job in disseminating dimensions for the XD-E to holster manufacturers. According to Springfield Armory’s website, at least 15 companies manufacture holsters for the XD-E. For IWB carry, I used a Crossbreed SuperTuck Deluxe in premium cowhide and a DeSantis Cozy Partner. Both worked well, but I have a slight preference for the all-leather Cozy Partner. I used a DeSantis Mini Slide OWB holster for carry at the range and around the house. When concealment wasn’t a priority, the OWB Mini Slide was the most comfortable of the three holsters. It also provided the quickest access to the XD-E. Holsters are a personal preference as long as they safely secure the pistol and cover the trigger and trigger guard. It is difficult and expensive to try various…

An EDC knife can mean different things to different people. You might carry a blade for hunting, fishing and other outdoor-related activities, or it might be an easily carried tool for opening packages and other everyday cutting chores.
