world’s fastest lens arrives

Stills photographers and videographers alike will be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the world’s fastest camera lens, the Voigtländer Super Nokton 29mm f/0.8 Aspherical. Available in Micro Four Thirds mount, the prime optic offers the equivalent angleification factor of the Micro Four Thirds sensor format, while the equivalent maximum aperture remains an impressive f/1.6. While photographers will enjoy the depth of field this lens will create, the inclusion of a stepless aperture ring will appeal to film-makers using Panasonic and Olympus cameras, and of course Blackmagic users. The lack of defined ‘clicks’ between aperture settings allows smooth alteration of brightness during filming, while also reducing the possibility of vibration during camera work. While there have been faster lenses in the past, such as the Carl Zeiss Super-Q-Gigantar 40mm f/0.33, any similar…

story behind the still

Photographer’s name: Adrian Galli Photographer’s website: www.adriangalli.com Image location: Chicago, USA Type of commission: Personal Shot details: Olympus OM-D E-M5 + M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8, 1/400s, f/8.0, ISO 200 Before the City With images such as this it is possible to see how much stills photography and cinema have in common – Adrian’s movie background helped him select the ideal photography composition About the shot: We can often end up becoming so focused on the technical aspects of a shot that we forget about the main purpose of every image – telling a story. With a background in visual storytelling, Adrian recognises the importance of this and is drawn to scenes with a strong narrative. “Working in film and TV, the cinematic story of the shot is what struck me. The story behind the man on the water alone…

say yes to the dress

For many, the power that images have for storytelling is one of photography’s biggest draws. Images have the ability to transport us to a different time or place, to describe moments without words, and to convey an entire narrative to the person viewing them. Photographs can sweep us into a scene and make us feel as if we are there. Tommy Reynolds has called himself a professional wedding and portrait photographer since 2013, but it’s his personal projects, cinematic approach and ability to understand people and their stories that stands his work apart. After watching Tommy’s moving talk at this year’s (virtual) Photography Show, we knew that he was the perfect person to shadow behind the scenes of a shoot. Luckily for us, he already has a very personal project in the…

pros of shooting tethered

Tommy uses a Tether Tools TetherPro cable to link his Leica straight to the Lightroom Classic software open on his laptop. Tethering means that the images are imported automatically, and Tommy is able to apply his saved processing presets in the software to see whether his vision for images is being met. “If I’m going to edit in Lightoom, there’s no point in me tethering into Capture One. I’ve got all of my presets dialled in, so I like the workflow of this approach.” If you’re working as a collaborative team in a studio, having the images displayed on a larger computer streamlines the process and means that everyone can see the results. During this shoot, Tommy could show the images to subject Hazel, whether this was to explain poses or…
