welcome

WELCOME TO THE AUGUST 2019 issue of Digital SLR Photography. Tryfan from Y Garn byAlessio Andreani www.alessioandreani.com “I planned this photo weeks in advance. There is some walking needed to reach this vantage point for a view of Y Garn in Snowdonia, Wales, so I needed a proper plan for the right time of the year; I went in April because I wanted some snow on the peaks and a lot of water in the lakes. Luckily the clouds did break up enough to reveal some sun rays and illumination.” NIKON D800 WITH 16-35MM F/4. EXPOSURE: 100 SECONDS AT F/11 (ISO 100). Boscastle, Cornwall by Alessio Andreani www.alessioandreani.com “This was one of the best and longest-lasting sunsets I have ever seen. macro marvels

NEW PHOTO CONTESTS usually take some time to attract a decent number of submissions and a high standard of entries, but the first ever Close-Up Photographer of the Year (CUPOTY) competition has delivered on both counts. Set up by husband and wife team Tracy and Daniel Calder, the competition aims to celebrate close-up, macro and micro photography and through the quality of the images, encourage photographers who have yet to try close-ups to give it a go. The competition was split into five categories: Animals, Plants & Fungi, Intimate Landscape, Manmade and Micro (for images captured with a microscope), as well as Young CUPOTY (for entrants aged 17 and under). Each category winner won £300, while the winning under-17 entrant, Josiah Launstein, was also awarded a Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro…
