The dreamy hotel behind me was the newly renovated Hotel Les Roches Rouges in southern France—a property informed by the sheer natural beauty of the place, with dusty palettes, concrete, stone and buttery worn-leather accents, and graphic stripes adorning the multilevel terraces built for lounging. After five blissed-out and fun-filled days with dear friends in Corsica—where ice-cold wine, grilled fish, and frites filled our seaside days—my husband, 7-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, and I (with my now-newborn son, Theo, still in my belly) enjoyed quiet family time. IN LIVING COLOR Canadian duo Matt and Shawna Heide of Concrete Cat began experimenting with vibrant pigments—from electric mint to moody indigo—after growing bored of the black-and-white palette that had come to define their architectural details business. “We felt like a lot of the things you can do with ceramics you could do with concrete,” says Matt, so the Edmonton-based couple branched out, casting side tables, catchalls, and even pipes in eye-popping patterns. All the pigments are applied to the concrete by hand, and the colors are stacked and mixed for a psychedelic effect.
