Back in early February 2020, I met with the interior designer Kelly Hoppen for tea at her London home. I’ve always been impressed by Kelly’s passion and her unstoppable drive and creativity. It’s infectious, and after every encounter with her I’m left with a sense of optimism and the idea that anything is possible. That occasion was no different. We discussed everything from new ventures and possible collaborations to this strange virus that was making the news and starting to impact on Kelly’s operations in China. She also excitedly showed me pictures of a barn that she had recently bought in the Cotswolds, a personal project she was about to start working on… Fast-forward over 12 months and Covid-19 has turned into something far more impactful than we could ever have…

the eyes have it

Multidisciplinary studio All The Way To Paris has created a new bedspread for long-time collaborator &Tradition. Made from organic cotton, ‘The Eye AP9’ quilt, featuring graphic lines and an iconic eye motif at the centre, comes in two evocative shades, ‘Midnight Blue’ and ‘Brown Earth’. ‘We wanted to play with the idea of the eye in this context – closed at night, open during the day. Flip it over to reveal a simpler design that shows the stitching of the eye without the print,’ explains All The Way To Paris co-founder Petra Olsson Gendt. £245 (andtradition.com).…

One of her latest constructions is the ‘Alea’ telescopic shelf, a unique design that runs from floor to ceiling and features five geometricshaped shelves for small items such as keys and trinkets. Approx £1,030 (jacobsroomdesign.com).…

all smiles

Originally conceived for last year’s ‘Connected’, an exhibition that challenged creatives to design furniture for new ways of working from and living at home, Jaime Hayon’s ‘Smile Stool’ for Benchmark marries the Spanish designer’s upbeat and playful aesthetic with the British workshop’s considered craftsmanship. Made from solid American cherry, the seat’s structural features have been cleverly arranged to create an expressive face – two of its legs form eyes while the cut-out mouth doubles as a handle. £495 (benchmarkfurniture.com).…

curves in all the right places

Following its debut furniture launch last year under artistic director Sam Baron, textile maison Pierre Frey has introduced three new collections. ‘Virgule’ by Christophe Delcourt is a nuanced design that merges minimalist lines and soft, sensuous curves. A modular system, it comprises corner units, sofa sections and standalone pieces that can be combined in various ways, with the design’s gentle undulations acting as a visual link across elements. From approx £1,091 for an armchair (pierrefrey.com).…
