CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.

The patterns are on Pattern Sheet 3. To use freezer paper to cut background pieces (A–C), complete steps 1 and 2, below. To use fusible web for appliqué pieces (D–R), complete steps 3 and 4, below.

1. Lay freezer paper, shiny side down, over patterns A, B, and C. Use a pencil to trace each pattern once, leaving 1¼" between tracings. Cut out freezerpaper shapes roughly 1⅛" outside traced lines.

2. Using a hot dry iron, press each freezer-paper shape, shiny side down, onto designated wool; let cool. Cut out wool shapes on drawn lines. Peel off freezer paper.

3. Lay fusible web, paper side up, over patterns D–R. Use a pencil to trace each pattern once, leaving 1¼" between tracings. Cut out each fusible-web shape roughly 1⅛" outside traced lines.

4. Following manufacturer’s instructions, press each fusible-web shape onto designated wool felt; let cool. Cut out wool felt shapes on drawn lines. Peel off paper backings.

From cream wool felt, cut:

ASSEMBLE SNOWMAN ORNAMENT

Use two strands of embroidery floss for all embroidery stitches. Refer to Photo A, opposite, for placement of embroidery stitches and buttons.

1. Referring to Snowman Appliqué Placement Diagram, on cream wool felt A background piece arrange appliqué pieces D–G. Fuse appliqués in place following manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Using floss in colors that match appliqués, blanket-stitch edges of D face and F hat. Using red floss, blanket-stitch edges of G hatband. Using orange floss, blanket-stitch edges of E nose.

To blanket-stitch, pull needle up at A (Blanket Stitch Diagram). Form a reverse L shape with floss, and hold angle of L shape in place with your thumb. Push needle down at B and come up at C to secure stitch. Continue in the same manner around entire shape.

3. Using pink floss, featherstitch embellishment on G hatband.

To featherstitch, bring needle up at A (Featherstitch Diagram), form a V shape with floss, and hold angle in place with your thumb. Push needle down at B, about 3/16" below A. Come up at C, about 1¼" to right of A, to secure stitch. For the next stitch, form a V shape with floss, insert needle at D (about 3/16" above C), and bring it out at E to secure stitch. Continue in the same manner for the width of the band.

4. Using green floss, chain-stitch greenery stems and straight-stitch greenery needles on hat.

To chain-stitch, pull needle up at A (Chain Stitch Diagram), form a U shape with floss, and hold shape in place with your thumb. Push needle down at B, about 1?16" from A, and come up at C to secure stitch. Continue in the same manner for desired length.

To straight-stitch, pull needle up at A (Straight Stitch Diagram) and push it down at B. Bring needle up at C, and push it down at D. Continue in the same manner for desired number of needles.

5. Using floss that matches the buttons, add 1¼"-diameter black buttons for eyes, 1⅛"-diameter black buttons for mouth, and 1⅛"-diameter cream buttons for hat greenery berries.

6. Using an 8"-long piece of black-and-white twine, take a stitch in hat. Tie twine ends in a knot to make a hanging loop and complete snowman ornament.

ASSEMBLE SANTA ORNAMENT

Use two strands of embroidery floss for all embroidery stitches. Refer to Photo B, page 52, for placement of embroidery stitches and buttons.

1. Referring to Santa Appliqué Placement Diagram, on cream wool felt B background piece arrange appliqué pieces H–L. Fuse appliqués in place following manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Using floss in colors that match appliqués, blanket-stitch edges of I beard and K hat. Using cream floss, blanket-stitch edges of J mustache and L hatband.

3. Using red floss, featherstitch embellishment on L hat trim.

4. Using green floss, fern-stitch and straight-stitch three greenery branches on I beard. For each branch, make three sets of fern stitches followed by two straight stitches.

To fern-stitch, bring needle up at A (Fern Stitch Diagram) and push it down at B. Bring needle up at C and push it down again at A. Pull needle up at D and push it down at A to complete one fern-stitch set. Bring needle up at E and push it down at F to begin next set of fern stitches.

5. Using red floss, add a French knot at the end of each greenery branch.

To make a French knot, bring needle up at A, the point where knot is desired (French Knot Diagram). Wrap floss around needle twice. Insert tip of needle into fabric at B, 1?16" away from A. Gently push wraps down needle to meet fabric. Pull needle and trailing floss through fabric slowly and smoothly.

6. Using gray floss, make a straight stitch for each eyebrow on H face.

7. Using floss that matches the buttons, add 3/16"-diameter black buttons for eyes, 1¼"-diameter red button for nose, and 3⅛"-diameter cream button at tip of hat.

8. Using an 8"-long piece of black-and-white twine, take a stitch in hat. Tie twine ends in a knot to make a hanging loop and complete Santa ornament.

ASSEMBLE SLEIGH ORNAMENT

Use two strands of embroidery floss for all embroidery stitches. Refer to Photo C, page 52, for placement of embroidery stitches and buttons.

1. Referring to Sleigh Appliqué Placement Diagram, on red wool felt C background piece arrange appliqué pieces M–R. Fuse pieces in place following manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Using floss in colors that match appliqués, blanket-stitch edges of M runner, N sleigh and Q tree. Using green floss, blanket-stitch edges of O and P leaves. Using cream floss, blanket-stitch edges of R sleigh trim.

3. Using cream floss, make a single long straight stitch in center of O and P leaves for vein lines.

4. Using red-and-white twine, make three long straight stitches in a zigzag pattern on Q tree for garland.

5. Using cream floss, add 3/16"-diameter cream buttons to tree for ornaments and 1¼"-diameter cream button at O and P leaves on sleigh.

6. Using an 8"-long piece of black-and-white twine, take a stitch in tree. Tie twine ends in a knot to make a hanging loop and complete sleigh ornament.
