CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.

From blue print, cut:

▪ 3—2½ ×42" strips
▪ 25—2½" squares

From light blue print, cut:

▪ 4—2½ ×42" strips
▪ 40—2½" squares

From solid white, cut:

▪ 28—2½ ×42" strips
▪ 6—2½ ×27" strips

From one green print, cut:

▪ 6—2½ ×27" strips

From each gray print and remaining green print, cut:

▪ 3—2½ ×42" strips

From one ¼-yard assorted print, cut:

▪ 20—2½" squares

From each remaining ¼-yard assorted print, cut:

▪ 16—2½" squares

From each red-orange print, cut:

▪ 2—2½ ×42" strips
▪ 20—2½" squares

From solid dark blue, cut:

▪ 8—2½ ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE A, B, AND C BLOCKS

Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.

1) Gather three blue print 2½ ×42" strips, three solid white 2½ ×42" strips, six solid white 2½ ×27" strips, six green print 2½ ×27" strips, 25 blue print 2½" squares, and twenty 2½" squares from one assorted print.

2) Sew together a blue print 2½ ×42" strip and a solid white 2½ ×42" strip along long edges to make Strip Set A (Diagram 1). Repeat to make three A strip sets total. Cut strip sets into forty 2½"-wide A segments.

3) Sew together two A segments to make a Four-Patch unit (Diagram 2). The unit should be 4½" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 Four-Patch units total.

4) Sew together two solid white 2½ ×27" strips and one green print 2½ ×27" strip along long edges to make Strip Set B (Diagram 3). Repeat to make a second Strip Set B. Cut strip sets into twenty 2½"-wide B segments.

5) Sew together two green print 2½ ×27" strips and one solid white 2½ ×27" strip along long edges to make Strip Set C (Diagram 4). Repeat to make a second Strip Set C. Cut strip sets into twenty 2½"-wide C segments.

6) Sew together a B segment and C segment to make a Six-Patch unit (Diagram 5). The unit should be 4½ ×6½" including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 Six-Patch units total.

7) Referring to Diagram 6, sew together five blue print 2½" squares and four 2½" squares from one assorted print in three rows. Join rows to make a Nine-Patch unit. The unit should be 6½" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make five Nine-Patch units total.

8) Referring to Diagram 7, lay out four Four-Patch units, four Six-Patch units, and a Nine-Patch unit in three rows. Sew together units in rows. Join rows to make Block A. The block should be 14½" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make five A blocks total.

9) Gather four light blue print 2½ ×42" strips, 10 solid white 2½ ×42" strips, six green print 2½ ×42" strips, 40 light blue print 2½" squares, and sixteen 2½" squares from each of two assorted prints (32 squares total).

10) Repeat steps 2 and 3 using light blue print and solid white 2½ ×42" strips to make four A strip sets. Cut strip sets into sixty-four 2½"-wide segments. Join segments to make 32 Four-Patch units.

11) Repeat steps 4–6 using three matching green print and three solid white 2½ ×42" strips to make one B strip set and one C strip set. Cut each strip set into sixteen 2½"- wide segments. Join segments to make 16 Six-Patch units.

12) Using remaining three matching green print 2½ ×42" strips and three solid white 2½ ×42" strips, repeat Step 11 to make 16 Six-Patch units.

13) Repeat Step 7 using 20 light blue print 2½" squares and sixteen 2½" squares from one assorted print to make four Nine-Patch units.

14) Repeat Step 13 using sixteen 2½" squares from second assorted print to make four Nine-Patch units.

15) Repeat Step 8 using four Step 10 Four-Patch units, four matching Step 11 Six-Patch units, and a Step 13 Nine-Patch unit to make Block B (Diagram 8). Repeat to make four B blocks total.

16) Repeat Step 8 using four Step 10 Four-Patch units, four matching Step 12 Six-Patch units, and a Step 14 Nine-Patch unit to make Block C (Diagram 9). Repeat to make four C blocks total.

ASSEMBLE D, E, AND F BLOCKS

1) Gather two matching red-orange print 2½ ×42" strips, five solid white 2½ ×42" strips, three matching gray print 2½ ×42" strips, one set of 20 redorange print 2½" squares that matches the red-orange print strips, and sixteen 2½" squares from one assorted print.

QUILT ASSEMBLY DIAGRAM

2) Repeat Assemble A, B, and C Blocks, steps 2 and 3, using red-orange print and solid white 2½ ×42" strips to make two A strip sets. Cut strip sets into thirty-two 2½"-wide segments. Join segments to make 16 Four-Patch units.

3) Repeat Assemble A, B, and C Blocks, steps 4–6, using gray print 2½ ×42" strips and three solid white 2½ ×42" strips to make one B strip set and one C strip set. Cut each strip set into sixteen 2½"-wide segments. Join segments to make 16 Six-Patch units.

4) Repeat Assemble A, B, and C Blocks, Step 7, using 20 matching red-orange print 2½" squares and sixteen 2½" squares from one assorted print to make four Nine-Patch units.

5) Repeat Assemble A, B, and C Blocks, Step 8, using four Step 2 Four-Patch units, four Step 3 Six-Patch units, and a Step 4 Nine-Patch unit to make Block D (Diagram 10). Repeat to make four D blocks total.

6) Repeat steps 1–5 to make four E blocks total (Diagram 11) and four F blocks total (Diagram 12).

ASSEMBLE QUILT TOP

1) Referring to Quilt Assembly Diagram, page 47, lay out blocks in five rows.

2) Sew together blocks in rows. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row.

3) Join rows to complete quilt top. Press seams in one direction.

FINISH QUILT

1) Layer quilt top, batting, and backing; baste. (For details, see Finishing, page 100.)

2) Quilt as desired. Michelle Berman machine-quilted straight lines ¼" apart across the quilt top.

3) Bind with solid dark blue binding strips. (For details, see Binding, page 102.)
