The lost year

THE FIRST SIGN THAT TWYLA JOSEPH’S COLLEGE APPLICATION process was not going to go as planned came on March 13, 2020, when, a day before her scheduled SAT, she learned the test had been canceled. The May and June tests were also canceled as coronavirus cases surged. Joseph never got to take the admissions test. She barely knows her high school teachers now that she takes all her classes online at home in Islip Terrace, N.Y. She missed out on seasons of varsity cross-country and track, and lost contact with the coach who “used to give us really good life advice.” During the five months she was furloughed from her job at Panera Bread, she spent the money she’d been saving for college. And while she’s back at work now for…

FAT FENDER RESCUE

FAT FENDER RESCUE

Although “barn find” is still a popular buzzword in the hot rod world, you’ll find that it is much more common to find an old car in a field or backyard. The unfortunate side of a field find or backyard discovery is that the car is typically not preserved as nicely as the ones that are stashed away under a roof. Such is the case with this forgotten fat-fender Ford that was recently pulled out of the weeds. This 1938 Ford Deluxe Coupe was found in the hills of Tennessee where it sat outside for most of its life, so it’s quite rough. You might notice that the paint is gone due to the abrasive cycle of sunshine, moisture, and of course, time. The climate plays a huge role in the…

Batiste also revealed on Grammy day that he secretly married author Suleika Jaouad, his longtime girlfriend, in February, shortly after she was diagnosed with leukemia for a second time. “Life has ups and downs. Just one big lie

IT WAS RARE for Bernard Madoff to invite anyone to his investment-advisory office. Almost all the employees in his brokerage firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, were kept out of that part, and had no idea what went on inside. The door was locked. Like his other offices, it was immaculate, with a starkly modernist décor of black, white and grey. When he caught one of his employees eating a pear there, dripping juice onto the grey carpet tiles, he immediately ripped out the stained tile and laid another. No sloppiness allowed. He set the tone himself, in a Savile Row suit with his wedding ring, gold or platinum, exactly matched to the wristband of his vintage watch of the day. All was done with elaborate care, including the handling of…

THIS IS the “Future Issue,” so the timing couldn’t be better to talk about who’s got next for the Toronto Raptors: power forward Chris Boucher. The lanky St. Lucian-born big has a great feel for the game, a non-stop motor and an impressive touch from deep. If he becomes Toronto’s best player in three seasons, we won’t be shocked. In a January 8 contest against Sacramento, Boucher was his typically efficient self—23 points, 10 boards and 2-4 from long distance. His most memorable highlight of the night, though, was an emphatic block against Marvin Bagley III. It was probably the best moment of the game, and so it became a Moment, literally; a platform called NBA Top Shot, owned by a company called Dapper Labs, immortalized the block by minting it…

ENAPTER Italian-based Enapter was founded by Sebastian-Justus Schmidt and Vaitea Cowan in 2017, to change the way we power our world. The company produces a scalable hydrogen generator, which uses anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis to turn water into emission-free hydrogen using renewable electricity, replacing fossil fuels and paving the way to clean and green energy. Speaking to hello! following their win, co-founder Vaitea told us: “Once Emma Watson announced us as winners I froze with joy. I could not believe it and never experienced such emotions. As a team, we are ecstatic to have won the Earthshot Prize. We are urgently working to make green hydrogen affordable for all, and this recognition is a vote of confidence in the impact our AEM electrolyser technology can have. We are so proud…

Kyle MacLachlan: Fame, Family & Rocking TikTok!

‘I’ve gotten more curious. It’s one of the great things about being an actor’ Whether trapped in a twisted love affair in Blue Velvet or fetishizing coffee and cherry pie as Twin Peaks’ special agent Dale Cooper, Kyle MacLachlan—who launched his career starring in director David Lynch’s dark fantasies—has always had a knack for noir. “I’ve been your guide through some dangerous places, like the boatman across the River Styx,” he reflects on a late-afternoon Zoom chat over coffee (one of “five or six” cups he has per day). But offscreen, as a husband and father, MacLachlan prefers the ordinary over the extraordinary. “I’m just a regular guy,” he says, “and being a regular guy is important to me.” That feeling was never more true than this past year, as MacLachlan enjoyed…

The Market Has Doubts About Facebook, Too

Despite all Facebook Inc.’s problems—many of them put on display recently as journalists publish articles based on a trove of leaked documents—the company is one of the most valuable on Earth. Its nearly $900 billion market value makes it almost 10 times bigger than Twitter Inc. and 20 times bigger than Snapchat parent Snap Inc. But those headline numbers conceal an uncomfortable truth: Investors are less optimistic about Facebook’s financial prospects than they are about those of its social media rivals—and the broader market. The market values Facebook at 20 times its predicted earnings over the next year. This metric is a gauge of how healthy investors think a company’s business model is, and how much more it can grow. Facebook is priced at a huge discount to domestic rivals: Snap…

Car builders—the real ones who do it repeatedly for a living—have a daunting challenge before them every time they start a new build. How do they one-up themselves after the last build? Bob Bertelsen is such a builder, and he knew topping his previous builds would take a lot of work and a fair amount of thinking outside the box. His two most notable pro-touring builds were a 1969 C10 truck called Orange Rush and a 1968 ’Vette named Green Mamba, both shot in retina-scorching colors, so it’s safe to assume Bob isn’t afraid of vibrant hues. For this build, Bob wanted to scratch his C2 Corvette itch. He had always loved the lines and had ideas about how to improve on them swirling in his cranium, but to bring them…

'The Lost Kitchen’s' Erin French: Turning a Painful Past Into a Delicious New Life

The waterfall outside the Lost Kitchen, the restaurant Erin French opened in 2014, is a reminder of how far she’s come. “The first year we opened, I would stand at the stove and look out the window,” says French, who started as a home cook and turned Freedom, a remote Maine town with only 719 residents, into a world-famous foodie destination. “It was like, ‘Oh my God, I would have never gotten to this beautiful point without all of that pain.’ I kept telling myself that I had to cry all of these rivers to find one waterfall.” In 2013 French entered rehab to treat an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. At the time, she was in the dark depths of a troubled first marriage, which resulted in divorce, a…

Who made Juneteenth?

Who made Juneteenth?

If you ask Black people born and raised on the island, Juneteenth marks the day Black soldiers in blue uniforms came with their guns to Galveston. That is the story they have told for generations, about the moment some of their ancestors knew freedom had finally arrived in Texas, the westernmost Confederate breakaway state. That’s the truth as it’s widely understood by Black people in Galveston, even if the common story of that day often focuses on a single white man: General Gordon Granger, who led Union troops to the harbor there on June 17, 1865. Two days later, records in the National Archives tell us, he issued what’s known as General Order No. 3. In doing so, Granger laid out the meaning of freedom more explicitly than any U.S. government…

To indict is right

EVIDENCE OF RUSSIAN war crimes litters Ukraine, but however much Ukrainians and some Russians wish differently, no one—least of all Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president—is likely to spend a single day in prison for them. Nonetheless, it is important that the atrocities are investigated. This is partly to commemorate those who were tortured, raped and murdered. It is also to expose the Kremlin’s lies to a world too inclined to let them pass. And public indictments of Russian troops would serve as a warning that may help deter the next round of killing. Ukraine’s prosecutor-general said on April 3rd that 410 civilians had been killed around Kyiv. Many more bodies will be found. The Economist saw the corpse of the mayor of Motyzhyn, a suburb, blindfolded and shot, apparently by Russian forces,…

“I want no white walls.” THAT WAS THE FIRST DIRECTIVE KATI CURTIS’S clients gave when she began work on their 1930s Tudor in Brookline, Massachusetts (which Curtis found on Zillow and “convinced them to buy”). “That,” says the pattern-loving designer, “was music to my ears!” One hitch: The home’s original layout didn’t allow in much light, which could have caused a color-rich scheme to feel claustrophobic. “It was a very inward-looking building,” explains architect J.B. Clancy of ART Architects, who was hired to help give the home a more modern flow, “and it was cut up into tons of little spaces with no access to the outside.” Curtis and Clancy came up with an unconventional solution, carving out a central stairwell above the entryway. The space acts as a sort of interior…

During an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show in late March, the charming actor let his guard down as he opened up about family life with his wife of six years, Amal, and their 3-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander. “Fatherhood has given me everything,” said a reflective George. “A sense of belonging, a sense of home and unconditional love.” A source tells Us the Oscar winner has been doing a lot of soul-searching as his 60th birthday approaches. “For years, George had a reputation of being super-private,” the source says. “But lately he’s been going out of his way to talk about deeply personal stuff, like the joys of parenthood. As time has worn on, he’s become far more of…

Can Magnets and a Giant Claw Save Us From Space Junk?

Can Magnets and a Giant Claw Save Us From Space Junk?

LAST SEPTEMBER, A TINY PIECE OF SHRAPNEL FROM the body of a Japanese H-2A rocket hurtled toward the International Space Station (ISS) and its crew at 17,500 miles per hour. An hour before the projected collision, flight controllers back on Earth powered up the spacecraft’s thrusters and moved it out of the way. That scrap of junk could have punched a hole in the hull of the space station, and it was the station’s third close call in two weeks. Since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, we’ve sent more than 10,000 objects into orbit. As these spacecraft increasingly collide, break apart, or explode, they generate massive clouds of debris that sweep across low-Earth orbit and pose a threat to the roughly 3,300 functioning satellites we rely on for navigation,…

TOOLS FOR A NEW AGE

Even during these unprecedented times, manufacturers have been rolling out innovations in every category of tool. While we appreciate progress, it can sometimes make the decision about what to buy even more difficult, forcing you to guess whether a certain spec bump will make a noticeable difference, or whether a fancy new marketing name has some useful tech behind it. So we spent the past year mowing, sawing, hammering, drilling, and wrenching in the Pop Mech Test Zone, evaluating hundreds of tools to determine what’s actually worth your dollar and what is truly groundbreaking. During this process, we were pleasantly surprised to find that some of our existing favorites still outperform and are more helpful than the new stuff. And here they are, the 52 best tools, accessories, and pieces…

On an April day in Manhattan, Erin Fox emerged from the giant glass building where she had gotten her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The Javits Center, home to comic-book confabs and one highly dramatic presidential nonvictory, had become a key hub of a New York City vaccination effort inoculating close to 100,000 people a day. It was now “operational nirvana,” said Fox, a vice president of operations for Kaplan North America, who was in and out with her shot in under half an hour. Walking into the afternoon sun, Fox felt “surprisingly emotional,” almost like “back-to-school jitters.” It was finally warm enough to loosen her jacket. “It’s like the COVID spring,” she says. “It’s poetic that people are getting vaccinated just as spring is coming, and spring is a symbol…

Waiting to be important

I DIDN’T “GO” TO WORK ON THE morning of March 17, meaning I didn’t get up, brush my teeth and place myself at my desk in the living room. I stayed in bed, made a cave out of the covers and watched the text messages roll in. “Thinking of you.” “Sending love.” “No need to respond.” It had been a strange and terrible night. I had watched an uplifting talk by a writer and friend, a survivor of sexual assault and a proud Asian-American activist. I’d added a few entries to the list she’d recently encouraged me to make, gathering moments when my biracial Asian identity has been used to make me feel different or small. Just a few days before, we’d laughed about my first item: At the sushi go-round…

Brad Paisley & Kimberly Williams-Paisley: ‘You Have to Focus on the Love & Laughter’

The moment the year 2020 went from unusual to down-right weird for Brad Paisley may have been when the country star found himself doing surgery on his 11-year-old son’s puffer fish. Puffers’ teeth can sometimes grow so long they can’t eat, and this one was in dire need of a tooth trim. “Brad was looking up YouTube videos to find out what to do,” says his wife, actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, 49, with a laugh. “I’ve never seen him nervous before, but his hand was shaking.” Their son Jasper had already lost two fish, and Brad, 48, didn’t want another casualty on his hands. After Internet consultation, he added drops of clove oil to a bucket of water (“to put the fish to sleep,” Kimberly explains) and went to work with a…

Julia Sherman and her creative director husband, Adam Katz, never planned to leave California for so long. “It was supposed to be a brief sojourn back to New York—then we ended up staying for 10 years,” says the founder of the addictive food site Salad for President. After establishing her brand; renovating a Brooklyn brownstone; and having their now 2-year-old daughter, Red, however, the family was craving the great outdoors. Direct access to green space is what drew them to their Pasadena fixer-upper in the first place. When the couple started looking for a potential West Coast nest, Sherman was hoping for something lush. “As an East Coaster, the desert landscape feels mortally threatening to me,” she says. “I’m much more of a deciduous-tree-canopy, dappled-light kind of person. EVERYMAN’S HOT ROD

As a preface to this narrative, let’s travel back to 2002 when then-Editor David Freiburger took on the task of eulogizing his mentor, Gray Baskerville, vis-a-vis a feature on his car. In many ways in our world, a person and his car are often one in the same. Our cars are a physical manifestation of our personalities, personas, aspirations, skills, and abilities. What we do with them is also representative. Gray’s car was his daily driver. It went on the very first HOT ROD Power Tour. It made dozens of trips to the Bonneville Salt Flats and California’s dry lakebeds. From about 1966 until Gray’s death in 2002, the car was not only synonymous with Gray, but it was also synonymous with HOT ROD itself. It went on the very first…

Thai and mighty

THAILAND IS USED TO UNREST. SINCE 1932, THE country, which is about twice the size of the UK and has roughly the same population, has endured 12 coups and 20 constitutions. What’s new this time is the direct criticism being levelled at the king. Thailand has traditionally revered its monarchs as semidivine and ‘yoo neua gaan meuang’ (‘above politics’) – draconian laws have long put them beyond reproach, even when they have ruled in concert with loathed military dictatorships. All that has changed in the past year. In sultry, traffic-clogged Bangkok, revolutionary spirit is growing. The rumblings began last July, when pro-democracy activists took to the streets. By November, there was unprecedented clamour for reform. Thousands are gathering for protests that now feel almost routine, and the future of Thailand hangs…

Its screen makes his face look like a ghost in the dark, his eyes scanning messages he didn’t have a chance to read during the day. Some from his wife and kids, many from his advisers, a few from his troops, surrounded in their bunkers, asking him again and again for more weapons to break the Russian siege. Inside his own bunker, the President has a habit of staring at his daily agenda even when the day is over. He lies awake and wonders whether he missed something, forgot someone. “It’s pointless,” Volodymyr Zelensky told me at the presidential compound in Kyiv, just…

Masters Of the Universes

Before Joe and Anthony Russo were dreaming up film and TV franchises, they were part of the biggest one. The brothers directed two Captain America movies and two Avengers films, installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which together took in almost $7 billion in ticket sales. Now they’re the guys industry executives turn to when they want to create a cinematic universe of their own. Throughout most of the history of Hollywood, franchises were born out of success. The studios ordered up sequels only after a TV show or movie became a hit. But the money-minting capabilities of Marvel, which stitches together interlocking stories across some 20 movies so far, has inspired Hollywood to rethink its approach. “The blockbuster gave way to the franchise play,” says Donna Langley, the chairman of…

What are the ten most memorable experiences in your very well-lived life? • A happy childhood. I assisted my father in the farm and particularly enjoyed watching during harvest time. On weekends, the family had a picnic with the most delicious food, including fish caught fresh from the pond. • Listening to my mother play the piano. I would sit in one corner while she played and listen in one corner when she was tutoring someone. We travelled to Manila by train to buy piano pieces and I loved the busy Rizal Avenue. This, plus summer vacations in Pagsanjan sparked my interest in travel. • Going to college. I was given a scholarship grant and student assistantship by my Fabella relatives so I was able to go to college. Those years were spent…

Taylor Swift rewrites history

IF YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION, YOU CAN HEAR IT: there’s a new lushness in the opening banjo twangs, and an extra beat when she sings the lyric “Just say yes.” But the difference between the 2008 version of Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” which helped propel Swift to pop stardom, and the 2021 rerelease of that same song is pretty subtle. Called “Taylor’s Version” on streaming platforms, the new mix will soon be followed by rerecordings of Swift’s back catalog, beginning with the rest of her album Fearless, which arrives April 9. In all these rerecordings, the lyrics and production haven’t changed that much: it’s Swift’s business that’s shifted. Now 31, Swift has gone full indie pop—as shown by her Grammy-winning turn on her recent album Folklore. But beneath those dreamy soundscapes…

OKAY, A 997 GT3 RS 4.0 IS A PREDICTABLE CHOICE, but for all the right reasons. For me this is the ultimate factory 911 and the pinnacle of the era that evo was born into. Nothing conveys a sense of purpose quite like the 4.0, from the angry, serrated engine note to the tough, short-throw gearshift. Nothing communicates quite so lucidly, either. You can feel every piece of gravel squished beneath the Cup tyres. Such raw feedback makes driving this fearsome 911 as easy as can be, whether on road or track and come rain or shine. I wouldn’t change a single thing. Perfection. If you’re lucky enough to own a Ferrari F50, you’re going to have to put up with people telling you the F40 is better for the rest…

After stepping out of their battery-powered Audi into the early-evening light at Alexandra Palace in London on Oct. 17, they exchanged a few quiet words as they strolled onto the green carpet. Kate—who rewore a 10-year-old gown, in keeping with the evening’s upcycled dress code—“obviously felt really proud with what William had achieved with this project,” says royal photographer Chris Jackson, who was backstage with the couple during the ceremony. “Seeing firsthand, you had this realization of the huge amount of work this was for him. It was a really special evening.” More than two years in the making,…

The Countess of Wessex choked back tears last week as she spoke of how the Duke of Edinburgh’s death had left a “giant-sized hole” in the lives of the royal family. Both women are professional chefs, and Jessica, a Long Island-born daughter of immigrants from Latvia and Ukraine, is fluent in Russian. The book’s instructions were intended as much for housewives as for their servants, who would be the ones actually preparing the roast goose stuffed with macaroni and the fish roulade. Jessica appreciated the joke but, at the time, didn’t bother studying the book closely. Neither she nor Trina imagined that, years later, it would become an emblem of their shared career. Jessica, who graduated from culinary school, traces her interest in food to her…

THE invincible woman

Long before we met, I thought I knew who Selma Blair was. As a pop culture buff, I’d watched her work, and I believed I could surmise what her life was like through red carpet photos, magazine covers, and movie screens. I came of age, and Blair rose to stardom, in an era before social media, when fans put public figures on a pedestal and projected a grandeur onto their every moment. On a recent Saturday night Blair and I met over Zoom. She was perched in front of a blue wall in her Los Angeles home, wearing a dreamy sequined Molly Goddard dress, with one knee pulled to her chest. I was in a New York hotel room, wearing my best red lip and quickly learning how wrong I…

Business as Usual

The quiet of my night on call was interrupted by the familiar chime of my pager. The message on the screen requested I come to the emergency room to evaluate a patient with chest pain. For a gastroenterologist, “chest pain” is a bit of an uncommon symptom; usually, such concerns go to cardiology. But sometimes people with chest pain have a GI cause for their troubles. When I arrived in the ER, the patient was sitting up in bed, leaning forward, and gently rocking back and forth in what was clearly a state of significant distress. Still, Matt, a 60-year-old salesman, was able to tell me what was going on. As part of his job, he occasionally had to take potential clients out to business dinners — lavish affairs at fancy…

The Chrysler Brand Cull Is Coming

The Chrysler Brand Cull Is Coming

Like Mad Men’s fictional merger of clumsily surnamed ad agencies, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot S.A. (PSA Group) have united their agglomeration of brands to produce a new corporation: Stellantis. That name would have Don Draper reaching for his Canadian Club; it’s more redolent of erectile-dysfunction ads than of anything automotive. But in a world with a hard-on for mergers and shareholders, the new company—valued at $52 billion when formed—brings the same old problems. First, what to do about stragglers such as Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lancia, Opel, DS, and Vauxhall. Some of these legacy brands, defenseless against nimbler rivals and electric disrupters, cannot survive. In a press conference on January 19, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares—a former rally driver and PSA chief executive—insisted that no job or brand cuts…

THIS FALL, NEWSWEEK, IN COLLABORATION with my company, the Best Practice Institute (BPI), will unveil the second annual Most Loved Workplaces list. The concept is simple: we feature the top 100 companies where employees feel cared for and respected—and have numerous opportunities for advancement. But before the new list appears, we’ll turn the spotlight on a few of the companies in the inaugural rankings. We started off with Pamela Maynard, CEO of Seattle consulting firm, Avanade, which was number 31 on last year’s list. Now we turn our attention to Chris Chen, CEO of Miami-based ChenMed, founded by his father, James. The company, number 36 on the 2021 rankings, operates a 3,500-employee chain of some 100 medical clinics that cater to Medicare recipients, many of whom are low income. ChenMed is interesting in…

Facebook Knows It’s Losing The Kids

In March a group of researchers inside Facebook Inc. compiled a report for Chris Cox, the chief product officer, to highlight a troubling trend that seemed to be accelerating: Facebook was losing popularity among teens and young adults. One colorful graphic showed that “time spent” by U.S. teenagers on Facebook in early February was down 16% from the previous year and that young adults in the U.S. were also spending 5% less time on the social network. The number of new teen sign-ups was declining, and people were joining later in life. Most people born before 2000 had created a Facebook account by age 19 or 20, the research showed. Facebook wasn’t expecting people born later to join the social network until they were much older, perhaps 24 or 25, if ever. The…

GAME CHANGERS WHEN LIANA WALLACE WAS LITTLE, WATCHING Survivor was a reward for behaving during bath time. Her brother Andre would channel host Jeff Probst by lighting candles during Tribal Council and snuffing out the “torch” of the eliminated contestant—always played by her other brother, Jordan. They were “super into” the show, says 21-year-old Wallace, even though their dad would occasionally walk into the room and question why no one on the CBS reality series looked like their family: “Where are all the Black folks?” Her dad’s observations were top of mind when she was flown out to be a contestant on season 41 of Survivor last March. But while waiting out the required COVID quarantine in a Fiji hotel, Wallace was able to lay eyes on her competition—which included five other…

THE EMANCIPATION OF MAJA

I remember pitching the concept of our IEmmy-nominated drama Bridges of Love to John Lloyd Cruz where Maja Salvador sat in to listen. In the original cast of the teleserye were John Lloyd Cruz, Piolo Pascual and Anne Curtis. After the pitch, Maja approached me and said, “Ang ganda ng role ni Anne. Sana akin na lang...” Months later, due to scheduling conflicts, none of the original cast were able to commit to the show and Paulo Avelino ended up with John Lloyd Cruz’ role, while Jericho Rosales landed the role that was intended for Piolo Pascual. The plum role of the leading lady the two actors would be fighting over went to no other than Maja Salvador. I pitched the story again, this time, specifically for her and after the pitch,…

Politics Emmanuel Macron was re-elected as president of France, again trouncing his nationalist-populist challenger Marine Le Pen. He won 58.5% of the vote to her 41.5%. However, Ms Le Pen increased her vote share by eight percentage points since their previous contest, in 2017, and turnout was the lowest since 1969. Mr Macron, a pro-European centrist, said he would try to address the anger of those who feel left behind by globalisation. He will now try to hold on to his party’s majority at parliamentary elections due in June. Fighting continued in eastern and southern Ukraine. The Russian invaders are trying to seize more territory, but have still not vanquished the last defenders of Mariupol, who are hunkered down in the vast Azovstal steelworks. First Look: 2024 Cadillac Celestiq

Is the 2024 Cadillac Celestiq for real? This head-turning, all-electric superluxury sedan is longer than the brand’s Escalade SUV and priced in a stratosphere Cadillac has long only dreamed of returning to. To wit: Pricing will start above the $300,000 threshold, but customers can easily add up to $100,000 more via customization, all but guaranteeing no two owners have the same exact car. The mere fact Cadillac is producing the Celestiq is nearly as surprising as the vehicle itself, which fulfills a longstanding desire to build a proper flagship. An idea became a vision, then a concept car, and now a fabulous final-form four-door that brings to life almost all the gee-whiz features envisioned along the way. The Celestiq has an estimated 600 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque, a 0–60…

The residence—in an area near Jalisco developed by the late Italian banker Gian Franco Brignone and dubbed Costa Careyes (“tortoise shells” in Spanish)—is home to fashion-world bon vivants Sally and Michel Perrin. For Michel, the chairman of his family’s 130-year-old French leather-goods house, Perrin Paris, and his American expat wife, Sally, who serves as the heritage brand’s creative director, Careyes is more than a part-time escape, it’s a way of life. “It’s a place that has brought us great joy,” she says. They were introduced to Costa Careyes when they were invited down from Los Angeles for a birthday party 14 years ago. “It was a real watershed moment for us—we just fell in love with…

A Scientist Takes on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Fighting to Save My Son

Thirty minutes into a Zoom interview about their decade-long battle to keep their 37-year-old son Whitney Dafoe alive, Janet Dafoe shoots her husband, Ron Davis, an anxious glance. Whitney suffers from a severe case of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)—an incurable disease that can leave its victims in a state of crippling fatigue and exhaustion. It’s been several hours since Whitney—who is bedridden and dependent on a feeding tube—last rang the tiny bell he uses to summon his parents when he needs something, and Janet, 71, can’t help but worry. “Sometimes when that happens, I get that feeling in the pit of my stomach that the next time I go in there, he’s going to be dead,” she says. She excuses herself for a moment to make sure Whitney’s all…

Desperate for debt forgiveness

HER $90,000 IN STUDENT DEBT TRAILED JILL WITKOWSKI Heaps for decades, like a pesky private eye, as she moved from New York to Fort Myers to New Orleans to Annapolis, always hovering to remind her of her negative net worth. And then one day, while sitting in a coffee shop near Buffalo, she learned it was gone. “Congratulations!” the email from her loan servicer, FedLoan, said. “You qualify for loan forgiveness.” Her balance was now $0. First, Heaps cried. Then she texted her husband. Then she logged onto the FedLoan website to make sure the email wasn’t some sort of cruel joke. “It was like I won the lottery,” says Heaps, a 43-year-old environmental lawyer whose loans were forgiven under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which is supposed to allow people…

The world is full of undiscovered treasures. Some people use metal detectors to dig up lost wonders, and others hunt garage sales for that pot of gold at the end of the proverbial rainbow. Gearheads, however, search the classifieds for their automotive lost treasure. This is that story, but this time around it wasn’t the high-tech interwebs, it was a printed ad in a small-time newspaper. Yep, those still exist. As Todd Evans explained, “I was browsing a little-known local newspaper that serves the High Desert areas of California and the Lake Havasu, Arizona, area on a Sunday evening when I ran across the ad. ‘CAR COLLECTION FOR SALE: 1963 Corvette cpe, 4 sp, SCCA race car w/spares.’ That was it, a small text ad with no pictures in a little…

A Teen Athlete’s Shocking Death: Murder in a High School Gym?

Around Valdosta, Ga., everyone knew Kendrick Johnson for his love of sports. The 17-year-old Lowndes High School junior played basketball and football—and often stayed after school to shoot hoops in the gym or run on the track to boost his stamina. So when Kendrick didn’t arrive home after his school day Jan. 10, 2013, his mom, Jacquelyn, wasn’t too worried at first. He hadn’t cleared it with her, but she thought maybe he’d told his father, Kenneth, about his plans. When she discovered Kendrick hadn’t been in contact with his dad either, though, the panicked parents filed a missing-persons report. And the next morning Jacquelyn headed to the high school to alert staff that her son was missing. “The counselor hadn’t heard,” Jacquelyn recalls. “But then her phone rang. A…

A Nasty Fight Over Financial Regulation

Cornell Law School professor Saule Omarova was thrust into the spotlight in September when the Biden administration announced her nomination for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a branch of the Treasury Department that polices some 1,125 banks. The choice of the avowed liberal and outspoken finance industry critic united Wall Street and tiny community lenders against her. So far, a pretty standard Washington story. But things quickly grew uglier and more personal. Republican lawmakers raised the specter of a Soviet-style takeover of the finance system, leaning partly on an article Omarova wrote imagining a new role for the Federal Reserve as a kind of public bank—and by asking pointed questions about her biography. Omarova, who was born in Kazakhstan when it was part of the former Soviet Union…

‘Re-commerce’ is Remaking Retail

AMERICANS ARE SCOOPING UP secondhand items at a record pace, thanks to a surge in digital resale platforms like Poshmark, Depop, thredUP and The RealReal. Now more traditional retailers want in on the action. This year alone, Americans will spend almost $179 billion on secondhand goods, up 96 percent from 2015, according to research from Mercari and GlobalData. By 2030, those firms contend, that number will nearly double to $354 billion—a growth rate 3.2 times that of the retail sector as a whole. And it’s not just a small segment driving the pre-used market: Three quarters of us, the Mercari/GlobalData research shows, bought at least one secondhand item last year. Those numbers are only part of the reason well-known name-brand retailers are now diving into the “new-to-you” business. This embrace of secondhand…

WELL, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? I MEAN, THINK about it seriously – because whatever you include in your all-time top ten list of cars inevitably says more about what you didn’t choose, rather than what you did. Which is where it actually becomes quite painful to make clear and concise decisions. Where’s the McLaren F1 in my list, for instance? Or the Caterham R500? And what about the Ferrari F40, which I’ve often given as my stock reply to anyone who’s sussed what I do for a living then asked: ‘So what’s the best car you’ve ever driven?’ When it comes right down to it, however, I’ve realised that the F40, lunatic of a car that it is, doesn’t even get a place in my Perfect 10. Instead, and having thought about…

A Teen Lifeguard’s Unsolved Murder: A Killer on the Beach

High atop her perch on the worn wooden lifeguard chair at Comins Pond in Warren, Mass., Molly Bish could see kids splashing in the water, diving under the surface and building sandcastles on the tree-shaded beach. The fun-loving, athletic high school honor student was excited to be lifeguarding at the popular swimming spot—following in the footsteps of her older brother John, then 20, who had lifeguarded there for years before her. When he landed a different summer job, 16-year-old Molly jumped at the chance to step in, even though her mom, Magi, was apprehensive about her daughter manning the post at the secluded pond. “She reassured me,” Magi remembers. “She said, ‘Mom, I’m not worried.’” What Molly couldn’t see as she watched over the pond was the evil lurking in the…

The Drivers of Success

The first substantive feature on Amazon.com that Fortune published was in December 1996. The title of that piece—“The Next Big Thing: A Bookstore?”—seems almost quaint in retrospect. Amazon.com, as the article explained, was “leading a wave of digital shops out to invade established industries,” a slew of upstarts taking on everything from publishing and stock trading to that most impregnable of advertising businesses, the telephone yellow pages. Amazon, the young prince in this domain, had no storefronts or pricey inventory to stock—back then, the company didn’t procure a title from a publisher or book distributor until after the customer had ordered it. Jeff Bezos, a former hedge funder who’d quit his Wall Street job, moved to Seattle, and managed to raise a tiny bit of seed capital to get his Internet…

Unlock Your Devices’ Full Potential With a USB-C Hub

AS NEW TECH SHRINKS EACH YEAR, essential ports like USB-A, HDMI, and ethernet are being replaced by the slimmer USB-C. A hub (often referred to as a dongle) is a small, port-laden gadget that plugs into a single USB-C slot on devices such as laptops, transmitting advanced data and power signals to stand in for those disappearing inputs and restore functionality. Befitting a tool that connects many others, these hubs are versatile, sometimes in ways that aren’t always apparent. Through them, many electronics you already own can connect to peripherals and displays. With some experimenting, you can turn a streaming stick, gaming console, or phone into fully functioning computers. SWITCH BETWEEN A LAPTOP AND A DESKTOP You probably know how to use a USB-C hub to add external devices like a hard drive…

COULDA-WOULDA-SHOULDA CAMARO

This custom 1969 Camaro is so good, Chevy should’ve built it! If America had an automotive sweetheart, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro would likely be a top contender. Few enthusiasts can gaze upon its illustrious lines and find fault in the stamped-steel skin. That takes skill. While few possess the eye to take such a car to the next level, there are builders unafraid to challenge the status quo. The reward has been countless revisions, revelations, and remasters that have augmented the blissful and ever-lasting romance with this iconic pony car. Jeff Lilly’s version does it again, but in a wildly different way. There are no linebacker-esque fender flares, no carbon-fiber accoutrements, or really any of the all-too-common queues found on many a custom car. Instead, Jeff took a step back in time,…

Part 1: Back in 2004 Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez broke off their engagement after an intense relationship that played out in a swirl of diamonds, red carpets and tabloid headlines. Part 2: Older, wiser and still passionate about each other, the superstars have rekindled their romance—and they’re determined to make it last. “They want a future together. Jennifer never thought she’d end up with Ben, but she’s thrilled that she did,” says a Lopez source. When Tom Jones’s smash song “It’s Not Unusual” hit No. 1 in the U.K. and catapulted him to fame at age 24 in 1965, there was one question he’d constantly get asked: “How long do you think you’ll be able to keep up the momentum?” Now 80, the superstar singer chuckles over Zoom as he recalls the answer he repeated over and over. “‘I’ll sing until I’m 97.’ Why I said 97? I don’t know,” he muses from his London home. “But the closer I’m getting to it, I’m thinking it will be 97. Hopefully it’ll be 100!” If Jones’s life at 80 is any indication, his hope for two more decades of music may very well come true. While many stars have slowed down over the past year amid the…

Conventional wisdom tells you to always take the call. So when a young couple from Cleveland dialed the Redd Kaihoi office asking to speak with Miles Redd, that is exactly what the AD100 superstar did. “They just gave the phone right to him,” marvels the client, who told Redd she and her husband were looking to design their forever home. Redd explained that a project of this scope was like a marriage, and suggested they meet in person. Cocktails in the Renzo Mongiardino–designed tearoom at The Carlyle in Manhattan confirmed immediate chemistry. As the clients exited, the wife recalls, “My husband, who is very analytical, turned to me and said, ‘Well, that’s done!’” The couple had found their decorator. The only problem: There was no house to decorate. The 29 acres…

SURPRISE CELEBRATIONS AS THEY RENEW THEIR WEDDING VOWS NATALIE ANDERSON AND JAMES SHEPHERD RED, WHITE AND BLUE ARE THE COLOURS OF THE DAY ON THEIR SPECIAL LOVE ISLAND IN THE MALDIVES

‘It was so magical and so intimate. It was perfect — all I dreamt it would be’Natalie With red petals falling like confetti from the blue sky onto the white sands of Velassaru in the Maldives, actress Natalie Anderson renewed her wedding vows in a surprise ceremony – so secret that not even her husband James Shepherd knew what was about to happen. Natalie hatched a plan with their nine-year-old son Freddie that played out in the finest tradition of a romantic film, with him delivering a special letter to get his father to the ceremony on time. “How James didn’t know is beyond me,” Natalie tells HELLO!, laughing. “It was so magical and so intimate with it just being the three of us. It was absolutely perfect and all I dreamt it…

What Did Ruth Know and When Did She Know It?

IT’S WELL KNOWN THAT BERNARD Madoff, now serving a 150-year prison sentence for a nearly $65 billion Ponzi scheme, is one of the greatest swindlers of all time. It’s less well known that he also ran an honest and successful market-making business, that he was one of the fathers of the NASDAQ stock market and that he pioneered the practice of trading firms paying retail brokers for the right to execute their customers’ trades (Robinhood, for instance, the company in the middle of the run-up of GameStop and other stocks this winter, receives payments from trading firms for its customer order flow). And it’s also less well known that other people who have never been prosecuted made far more from Madoff’s crimes than he ever did and that authorities had…

Postcards from the PALAZZO’S EDGE

“This palazzo shows us classicism as something bold, but even more as something pure, almost abstract. It is at once modern and traditional. Its strength is how it looks backward and forward at the same time.” The architecture critic Paul Goldberger is talking here about a building in Milan called Casa Campanini-Bonomi that is unusual in several ways, not least in that it is now best known for the American who acquired it in 1999: Ralph Lauren. The designer has a gift for making familiar but important architecture signify anew (as he did in 1986 with the Rhinelander mansion in New York, changing retail forever). The 12,000-square-foot Rationalist masterpiece on Via S. Barnaba had until recently served as his Italian headquarters—a showroom more than creative incubator, a place for business rather…

The Truth About the Black Knight Conspiracy Theory

TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THE PHOTOgraph on this page. NASA captured this image of a mysterious black object orbiting the Earth in 1998, during the first Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The space agency refers to the strange entity as item STS088-724-66 in its catalogue of space junk floating in low-Earth orbit (within 1,200 miles). Jerry Ross, an astronaut who took part in that mission, says that the object is a wayward thermal blanket that broke loose while his team tried to attach an American module to a Russian module on the ISS. But for a small, devoted following, it’s a 13,000-year-old, artificially made satellite known as the Black Knight. So, could this peculiar object really have come from ancient aliens? Or is it just an innocuous…

YES, IT’S OK TO SAY NO

Three years ago, during our Series A, I was talking to a lot of people I didn’t know and a lot of people who didn’t know me. And I turned down everyone who wanted to invest with a board seat as a prerequisite. This is highly abnormal; everyone will tell you when you’re raising money that you can’t say no unless you’re already a massive success. But my goal, which I’ve since achieved, was to build the fastest-growing American whiskey brand in history. No one had done what I wanted to do, so I knew it wasn’t going to happen on anyone’s advice. When this process resumed with a later funding round, I had lunch with Helen Johnson-Leipold, one of my investors, to see if she thought I needed to add a formal…

The world this week

Politics Having failed to take Kyiv, Russian troops retreated, leaving behind evidence of war crimes. In one town, Bucha, dozens of corpses were found. Some had had their hands tied behind their backs before being shot. Survivors described the cold-blooded murder of Ukrainian men suspected of resisting the invasion. Ukrainian officials said that the bodies of at least 410 civilians, including children, had been found in areas around the capital. The Kremlin said the evidence of atrocities was faked by the Ukrainian government. Russian forces are now regrouping in eastern Ukraine, perhaps hoping to seize all of Donbas. Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, urged the UN Security Council to remove Russia as a member. He also called for a tribunal for the Russians who gave the orders to commit atrocities. Russia has a…

The lifesaving factory

IF YOU’VE BEEN VACCINATED FOR COVID-19, chances are pretty high that you’re benefiting from a product made by BioNTech. The German biotech company, co-founded by a husband-and-wife team of scientists, developed the vaccine that became not only the first to earn authorization in the U.S. for COVID-19 in December but also the first ever based on a new technology involving the genetic material mRNA. In interviews in December and March, co-founders Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci spoke about their whirlwind year and their partnership with U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer to test and manufacture the vaccine. Over three days in late March, they also opened up their new manufacturing plant to TIME for the first step-by-step look at how their lifesaving, and potentially pandemic-ending, vaccine is made. When Sahin read a scientific paper…

SWEET HOMES, ALABAMA

SWEET HOMES, ALABAMA

BILL SMITH STEERS HIS MIDNIGHT SILVER TESLA X THROUGH THE STREETS OF DOWNTOWN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, AND PULLS INTO A LOW-RISE APARTMENT COMPLEX. “This used to be a brothel 100 years ago,” he says with a smile. Today, it’s a modern, renovated building, one of dozens in this old industrial city where his company, Landing, rents fully furnished flexible-lease apartments. A thin man with intense blue eyes, Smith, 36, steps into a sunny one-bedroom with a railroad layout. It goes for $1,800 a month, a 20% premium to what it would rent for empty. It’s decorated with innocuous furniture, inoffensive linens, even taupe dishware, all designed and manufactured by his team. “Someone wants to move into an apartment in five days, we have to be able to acquire it and make it beautiful in…

HISTORIC PERSPECTIVE

Renaissance woman in the truest sense, interior designer Sheila Bridges has hosted a TV show, published two books, and created the now-iconic Harlem Toile pattern every socially aware aesthete loves. The AD100 talent talks fast—ideas whirling out of her mind and mouth—and it can be tough to keep up. Searingly quick-witted, she somehow manages to balance charm, warmth, and humor without sacrificing her exacting eye. As layered as her interiors, this gracious spirit has used design as an avenue for experimentation and discovery for the last 30 years. “One of the things I really try to do in my interiors is to not use the same thing twice,” she says. There’s certainly no fear of repetition in a recent large project she completed in Bedford Hills, New York. Set on 23…

Julianna Margulies: What I Know Now

Julianna Margulies knew exactly what kind of parent she was—and wasn’t—going to be. When she and her husband, attorney Keith Lieberthal, 48, were expecting their son Kieran, now 13, the actress, 54, was determined not to repeat the patterns of her often absent father, Paul, an ad exec and writer who died in 2014, and free-spirit mother, Francesca. “One of the things I craved as a child was boundaries—I wanted someone to need me home at a certain hour. I wanted someone to check my homework,” says Margulies. “I really wasn’t parented enough.” As she details in her new memoir Sunshine Girl (see excerpt), she and sisters Alexandra and Rachel shuttled between homes on the East Coast and in Europe after her parents split when she was a baby. (“It…

The Man Behind the Metaverse

Before the wave of stories published on Oct. 25 revealed new details about the troubling ways Facebook Inc. runs its social networks, the company had been hoping to spend the week talking about its plans to expand beyond that business. A major theme at its annual Connect conference on Oct. 28 will be the company’s ambitions for the so-called metaverse, a new digital space that it believes will supplant smartphone apps as the primary form of online interaction. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has said pursuing this path will transform Facebook, and has publicly set a goal of attracting 1 billion users to the metaverse by the end of the decade. The metaverse has played a prominent role in science fiction for decades—the digital universes of the novels Snow Crash and…

The Army’s Super Cannon Is Coming. Could It Bring Back Battleships?

THE U.S. ARMY IS WORKING ON A NEW, long-range cannon it claims can reach out and strike targets at up to 1,150 miles—about 1,130 miles farther than existing guns. But the Strategic Long Range Cannon (SLRC) also has the potential to bring back a dormant class of big-gun warships once thought gone for good: the mighty battleship. The Army hasn’t yet explained how the SLRC will reach the extraordinary range, but it seems confident the gun will work as planned, aiming to test a prototype in 2023. The service sees the weapon as a towed gun pulled by a heavy truck, using its range to blast a hole in enemy air and sea defenses big enough for U.S. forces to squeeze through. But the SLRC faces limitations as a wholly land-based…

The End of Analog

The End of Analog

Q Over the years, I’ve discovered that sound and vision are multichannel analog input. two distinct camps in the home theater realm, and it’s best to keep them separated due to constantly changing video formats. That’s why I’ve held off from upgrading to an A/V receiver with HDMI, choosing instead to retain my 15-year-old Yamaha RX-V659 for audio duty and let a disc player handle video. For example, connecting my current Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player via its 7.1-channel analog output to the Yamaha AVR’s multichannel analog input lets me hear lossless soundtracks on Blu-ray, while an HDMI connection made directly from the player to my TV handles high-def video. To continue this trend (A/V separation) in the 4K era, I am planning an upgrade to Panasonic’s DP-UB9000 Ultra HD Blu-ray player.…

Jessica Walter (1941-2021): A Toast to a Funny Lady

In her long career Jessica Walter was never the go-to actress for what she called “Miss Vanilla Ice Cream” roles. “I was always a character actor,” she said. Then, at age 62, she landed the role of a lifetime—one without a single drop of vanilla. On the cult classic Arrested Development, a comedy of breakneck ingenuity that aired on Fox from 2003 to 2006 before being resurrected on Netflix from 2018 to 2019, she was Lucille Bluth, the poisonously sarcastic, martini-swilling matriarch of a dysfunctional family. (Iconic line: “I want to cry so bad, but I don’t think I can spare the moisture.”) Walter wasn’t actually fond of martinis—they caused her “little palpitations,” she said—but she adored everything that came with the part, including strangers recognizing her and imitating Lucille’s…

How rotten is Russia’s army?

THE MIGHT of the modern Russian army was supposed to show the world that President Vladimir Putin had restored his country to greatness after the humiliation of the Soviet collapse. Instead, poor progress and heavy losses in Ukraine have exposed deep flaws within Russia. For those threatened by Mr Putin’s aggression, a diminished army is a relief. Unfortunately, it also leaves a nuclear-armed power with a point to prove. So far, the invasion of Ukraine has been a disaster for Russia’s armed forces. About 15,000 troops have been killed in two months of fighting, according to Britain’s government. At least 1,600 armoured vehicles have been destroyed, along with dozens of aircraft and the flagship of the Black Sea fleet. The assault on the capital, Kyiv, was a chaotic failure. Leon Trotsky wrote…

Tras dar a conocer la noticia, Eugenia Osborne, que se ha querido mantener al margen, refugiada en su familia, ha sido fotografiada, por primera vez, mientras pasaba el día en la playa con sus tres hijos, en la costa gaditana.
