The Power of Protein Add some lean meat to your cookout menus: A small study from the German Center for Diabetes Research found that participants with a diet rich in lean protein and low in calories had a significant reduction of excess fat in the liver compared to those on a low-protein diet. Check out the grilled chicken recipes on page 98—a skinless, boneless chicken breast has more than 50 grams of protein! A Win for Wine and Cheese A new study from Iowa State University showed possible links between wine and cheese and the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers looked at data and diets from 1,787 aging adults, and cheese appeared to be the most protective food against age-related cognitive problems, with red wine following behind. Looking Good Vitamin A is great for your…

7:30 a.m. I’ve been working out and eating clean with a goal of entering a bodybuilding competition. I feel fantastic, but it’s still work every day. My breakfast needs to have protein in it. It’s such a busy day today that I’m going with my old standby of oatmeal: I pop it in the microwave, add fruit, protein powder, sugar and cinnamon. I feel full and powered. 8:30 a.m. My husband and I moved into an Airbnb in Nashville last night with filming equipment because I’m going to do a bunch of demos. We are busy, but I don’t let that stop me from getting in my morning exercise. On days that are jam-packed like today it’s easy to lose track of time, and exercise has become a commitment I make…

We’re trying something new this month: We’re giving $500 to the person who can take the best photo of an ice cream float. I know this isn’t a gigantic prize by recipe-contest standards. (For that you should turn to page 48, where you could win $10,000 for the best meat-mushroom burger!) But I would argue that $500 is a lot of money for a relatively simple assignment: You just have to pour some soda over ice cream, add a garnish or two and take a shot. This is a fair contest, too, because pretty much anyone with a phone and a window can be a great food photographer these days. I’ve taken some awful food photos in the past, but I got a new iPhone 12 a few months ago and…
