Dear frankie, I, too, have struggled for years with the ‘awkward address’, as Emily Naismith put it in issue 97 – but now the stress and confusion of walking past a stranger has been further clouded with face masks. My go-to, the smile, has been taken from me. I’ve trialled the eyebrow raise, but fear it conveys a warning that there’s someone lurking behind them. When we were releasing “You Oughta Know” in 1995, we sent it to radio stations and the initial response from all the program directors was, “Oh, we’re already playing Sinéad O’Connor, so we’re good on women,” or, “We’ve hit our quota – we already play Tori Amos.” Literally one female artist was allocated to every radio station. There are pets in my house whose names I forget. Ingrid lives in the kitchen, Marquez in the bathroom – but is the guy in my bedroom Wallace or Willis? And is he actually male?
