av avenger

I’VE THROWN THE Avenging spotlight on Netflix’s propensity to cancel shows prematurely before. A ruthless streak became evident some time ago, but it’s now looking very much like a long-term strategy. I think it’s clear what’s going on. The data-driven streamer doesn’t care what fans think when it pulls the plug, it’s simply following the science. A show might debut to a warm reception and big numbers (48 million of us apparently watched Ratched in its first 28 days), but if Netflix isn’t convinced that it can deliver even more viewers with subsequent seasons, rather than simply entertaining those already watching, then the show has served its purpose, and there's no point continuing. And because its number crunching is becoming ever more efficient, it doesn’t even have to wait for two seasons…

always take the weather with you…

→ WEATHERING WITH YOU Arriving in Tokyo during a period of heavy rain, teenage runaway Hodaka befriends Hina, an orphan girl with the supernatural ability to make the skies clear. Together they set up a business hiring out Hina to dispel bad weather during outdoor events – but the more Hina uses her powers, the more she begins to undergo a change that threatens to tear the pair apart forever. The latest animation from writer-director Makoto Shinkai, Weathering With You broke annual box office records on its release in Japan last year, and became the country’s twelfth highest grossing film of all time. While unlikely to have a similar impact on these shores, it’ll appeal to fans of Shinkai’s previous romantic fantasy, 2016’s delightful Your Name, even though it doesn’t shine quite as…

Marantz's AV7706 (£2,200, pictured atop an MM7705 power amp) is its latest 11-channel processor/analogue pre-amp. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X-enabled, with further support for Auro-3D and IMAX Enhanced, its lengthy feature list includes balanced XLR pre-outs, wired/wireless networking (including Bluetooth and HEOS), an MM phono stage for vinylistas, and AKM 32-bit DACs across all channels. 'The AV7706 is the bedrock of any system demanding masterful fidelity,' says the brand. Red REL sub is ready to rumble Those looking for a little subwoofer glamour can check out REL's T/9i RED. Priced £1,200, this takes the 10in driver/300W amplifier specification of the standard T/9i model and dresses it in an eye-catching red-gloss finish (inspired by Ferrari); it also gains a triple-chromed top-plate badge with carbon fibre edging, and carbon fibre-sleeved feet. Says REL of its…

edge of darkness

WHILE IT DOESN'T boast the Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) backlight found higher up Samsung’s 2020 QLED range, the edge-lit Q70T still offers plenty of temptations. Its picture performance is bolstered by AI processing enhancements, and it’s currently one of the least expensive 4K TVs to offer full-throttle 120fps support, a display option from both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Also available in 65in, 75in and 85in sizes, the 55in model on our test bench was, at the time of writing, available for £900. But make sure to check around before you buy, especially this time of year when prices are fluctuating. I found the 55in version of Samsung's step-up FALD Q80T on sale for around the same. While we’re not sure how ubiquitous high-frame-rate gaming will be, and therefore how essential…
