For cutting sand tea parties After searching the internet for the perfect plans for a glass greenhouse, with no luck, Helen van der Westhuizen and her husband PJ of East London drew their own design. They based it on eight standard-sized sliding doors fitted together in an octagon shape, after which PJ designed the roof trusses to match – and two months later, the structure was in place. Initially, the couple wanted to lay tiles on the cement floor but since the tile they liked was very expensive, stencil work was a good alternative. “We love tackling projects ourselves,” says Helen. When this TV channel head decided just before the Covid-19 pandemic that her Victorian house in Tamboerskloof needed a second revamp, she was keen to create a tranquil haven with heaps of personality and style. “But not too grand, thank you. The right prep and paint Q: Jenna and Eugene Theron painted the pine ceiling and fireplace in their lounge, as featured in your April 2020 issue. How should these surfaces be prepared, and which paints were used? Jenna Theron replies To start, give the varnished knotty pine ceiling a light sanding with a fine-grit sandpaper to clean it and to create grip for the primer. Thereafter, follow these steps: For the ceiling 1 Apply one coat of general primer; we used Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Base Primer. 2 Apply two coats of regular ceiling paint; if you prefer a high gloss finish (the same as used on skirting boards), use a high gloss non-drip enamel.
