Joanna Saltz: What do you want people to feel when they walk into one of your spaces? Shelley Johnstone: I’d say happy. I had one of my clients take photos of her four children jumping off a boat on vacation, in their happy place, and then I put that up on the wall in large scale. It’s not a home until it has those little details. Megan Winters: Joyful! Whether it’s the fabric on the back of the sofa or something they brought back from Paris, it needs to evoke something in the heart! Kara Mann: Comfortable. I personally love when you can put your feet up on the sofa, and dogs and cats can sleep in bed with you. People living in a space—really living in it—adds a layer. Jo: You want a place where…

hidden doors

Blend It In Practically speaking, a jib door is great for when “a door is needed, but visually in the way,” says designer Thomas Jayne. For this powder room by Cronk Duch Architecture, wall molding disguises the opening when it’s pivoted shut. Give It Purpose Like jib doors, bookshelf Murphy doors are great at blending in with their surroundings (not to mention, they add storage). Pick out a style at murphydoor.com; the units come with detailed instruction manuals for installation. LIVE BETTER AWARDS WINNER To discover more Live Better Award winners, flip to p. 43. how to install a jib door

1. PICK A HINGE Soss hinges are concealed between the frame and door, functioning like an accordion. They’re about $30 each but invisible when the door is closed. 2. PREP THE DOORWAY A skilled carpenter can fit the opening exactly to the door so it’s flush with the wall when closed. Adding a touch-to-open spring latch will mean you don’t have to add a knob. 3. CHOOSE A DISGUISE Paint the door the same color as the wall and replicate any moldings. Or use a wallcovering; murals give a very storybook look. where work feels more fun

MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT–turned-designer Sarah Robertson always approaches her projects with a can-do mindset. Take this 1910 Queen Anne home in New York’s Westchester County. Originally, it held a dark and cramped kitchen. The backyard, on the other hand, was totally dreamy. So the owners reached out to Robertson, whose firm, Studio Dearborn, has specialized in kitchens for more than a decade. Working with Stoll & Stoll Architects, she moved the kitchen to the back of the house, where it looks out onto the greenery. To make the room feel expansive, they bumped up the roofline to create a wood-paneled tray ceiling and added eight windows. Robertson assigned storage to lower cabinets, drawers, and one wall. “We wanted that open connection to the backyard,” she explains, “and I like to maximize storage.” Here,…
