letter from the editor

Passion with purpose. Some people have a clear vision of what they want to do or be when they grow up, early on in their lives. Some discover their passion when they eventually experience more things in life. Purpose, however, is something we discover in a much later stage of our lives. This issue is not only about our passions in life and the journey to its discovery, but also about how we live a purposeful life through it. What’s the difference between passion and purpose? According to Oprah, “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” It is very much individualistic in a way because it’s about what you want. Passion is about discovering what you love doing and pursuing it. It is emotionally…

a world of his own

In fluid amalgamations of graffiti, cartoons, and realist images, Ronald Ventura’s visual creations invite viewers to play with their imagination and discover their own realities. The artistic visionary is known for his dynamic images, with his painting Grayground, setting a record for the highest-paid work of Southeast Asian contemporary art in Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings auction in Hong Kong, sold for $1.1 million. Many of his works have been procured by notable collectors in the art world. Ronald says of his thought process, “When you’re in the midst of the process, you don’t consider a specific style. You create your own. Your style is the accumulation of everything you’ve absorbed, from feelings to memories. It is the reflection of thoughts made by your mind,” he explains. “You have…

the art of giving back

Sheila Romero hands me a catalogue before we begin our interview. It lists the pieces donated to this year’s “Benefit,” a collaboration between her foundation, iWantToShare, and Salcedo Auctions’ Gavel & Block. We briefly talk about the portrait printed on the cover—an expressionist painting by Emmanuel Garibay. “This painting fetched a record price of 1.9 million pesos. That’s my working budget for one ward,” she says, referring to the chemo-isolation ward of the Philippine General Hospital’s (PGH) Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Department—one of iWantToShare’s major beneficiaries since 2016. “God’s hand played a significant role in this—He orchestrated great things to happen. Now, we have more funds for other needs of the children,” the founder exclaims. FOSTERING HOLISTIC HEALTHCARE Since the inception of their partnership with PGH, iWantToShare has espoused a holistic approach to help the patients…

saez-bautista

Jeff Saez and Patricia Bautistsa met at work in 2010. "Jeff is the founder and CEO of NuWorks Interactive—an innovations agency, and I joined during its start-up phase," says Patricia. "As we grew the company throughout the years, our relationship developed and we got together in 2016." They were a couple for two years before Jeff proposed while on vacation in Lisbon, Portugal. He took her to a quiet park in Alfama that was overlooking the city. "It was very intimate, which is something we both wanted," remembers Patricia. “The moment he knelt to pop the question, a photographer popped out of nowhere, and apparently Jeff planned a romantic photo walk around the area.” The ring was from JJ Jiao. Patricia and Jeff decided to have a destination wedding in Bali because…

siccion-olivarez

Ric Siccion and Christine Olivarez met at a business convention in Singapore and were together for four years before he proposed on Valentine’s Day. “When I stepped down the car, I saw a display of fireworks, a giant bouquet of flowers and balloons,” says Christine. “The next thing I know, Ric was down on one knee, holding a little box with a diamond ring inside, and then he asked me if I can marry him.” The ceremony took place at the Manila Cathedral, followed by a dinner reception at Okada Manila, in the presence of their families and closest friends. Christine says that what made her wedding memorable was its uniqueness. “We wouldn’t change any detail of the wedding. It was magical and very memorable for us,” says the happy bride. Bridal…
