So let’s take a leaf from their book, take stock and reflect on the year that has passed. Have goals been met, new achievements been unlocked and did you learn anything new? Only then can you set new goals for the next year, and the steps needed to achieve them. In every Society magazine that we roll out each year, we present a veritable list of the most powerful and influential people shaping our country. We have also compiled a roundup of the top parties throughout the year, society’s most invited and the city’s most fashionable. It’s not easy to be accepted into the upper echelons of society, and so we’ve asked several individuals, people that wield a certain amount of influence, to dish some advice on party etiquette and the…

US$48.4m The price a Ferrari 250 GTO fetched via Sotheby’s in August, making it the most expensive car ever sold at auction. The car’s former owner, Microsoft employee Greg Whitten, bought it for one-tenth of that in 2000. Talk about a fast buck. £50,000 The cost of the wedding cake for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle—a buttercreamsmothered lemon and elderflower sponge. Made by Claire Ptak of London’s Violet Cakes, the dessert broke with British royal wedding tradition, which dictates the serving of fruitcake. 32 The number of Michelin stars accumulated by Joël Robuchon’s restaurants over his lifetime. The iconic French chef, known for his perfectionism, died in August at the age of 73. #1 The ranking of the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians at the US box office on its opening weekend in…

Smooth Sailing When the sea gets rough, eat saltines to settle your stomach, or so the old salts say. Better still, step aboard the Foiler from Enata Marine, a 9.5-metre hydrofoil that cuts through choppy water by skimming 1.5 metres above it at 40 knots (74km/h). This flying superyacht is anchored by four foils that keep her extremely stable and resistant to wave interference. Propulsion comes from two 320HP BMW engines hooked up to two generators and two electric motors. At cruising speed, the vessel’s 300-litre fuel tank gives her a range of 240 kilometres. The retractable foils are strong enough to support the weight of eight passengers in the boat as she flies above the water’s surface. With her sleek style and cutting-edge hull design, you don’t need to be…

top parties of the year

A Ball of a Time As the trickle turned to a torrent and guests began to surge against the holds of the foyer, it was time to throw open the doors and welcome them to the magical spectacle that was the 29th Malaysia Tatler Ball at Four Seasons Hotel’s grand ballroom. Decked to the nines, thanks to Razak Luxe Decor, an exquisite multi-course dinner awaited inside, but that wasn’t the extent of Malaysia Tatler’s hospitality. Musical entertainment for the evening included Datuk Syafinaz Selamat and the Mad Sally band. Soon enough though, hush fell over the crowd as all eyes were on the stage for the main highlight—the awards ceremony. Some tears of joy and touching sentiments were felt as the eloquent acceptance speeches of the award winners (Michele Kwok and…
