I’m the youngest of six, and my brothers and sisters have always stressed to me the history of our family. My grandfather was the first African American elected official in his rural Louisiana town. After the murders of Breonna [Taylor] and George [Floyd], some friends and I were trying to figure out what we could do to help. We created I Am a Man with the goal to get as many young men as we could to register to vote. We’re trying to give them information they need and the platform to register so that they can make an educated vote. Because of COVID, we’ve been doing our work virtually at high schools and universities. We’ve partnered with a bunch of public schools in my own town of New Orleans…

A Dog Lover Donates Thousands of Oxygen Masks to Help Save Pets From the Wildfires ANAHEIM, CALIF. In 2007 Debra Jo Chiapuzio adopted a 4-month-old puppy who’d been rescued from a local wildfire and named her Emma Zen. “Nobody has ever grounded me more,” says Chiapuzio of the Great Dane-Lab mix. So in 2011 Chiapuzio formed the Emma Zen Foundation to help other animals caught in wildfires by equipping firefighters with pet-size oxygen masks. Since then she’s donated more than 7,500 masks nationwide and helped save hundreds of animals—including dogs, cats, iguanas, even hamsters. “The one constant in my life has been the love of a good pet,” says Chiapuzio, 58, a pet-first-aid and animal-CPR instructor who also trains first responders on how to use the cone-shaped masks, which are made to fit…

And what did you learn? These centers are at the forefront of technology—satellite imaging, face recognition and cameras they can personally turn, whether it’s on the promenade at Santa Monica or the pier. How have you been handling quarantine? After a couple of weeks I was like, “Okay, this place could be a lot cleaner.” GEORGE PIMENTEL/GETTY IMAGES; ABC…

matthew mcconaughey: livin’ the dream

Matthew McConaughey was all of 8 years old when he realized what he wanted to be when he grew up. “Oscar-winning actor” wasn’t yet in his vocabulary, and Hollywood was a long 1,295 miles from Uvalde, Texas, his hometown. “The only thing I ever knew I wanted to be was a father,” says McConaughey, 50, spirited and open during a wide-ranging chat via Zoom. “And it’s remained the pinnacle for me. Being a dad was always my only dream.” To McConaughey’s delight, that dream came true three times over. In Levi, 12, Vida, 10, and Livingston, 8, his kids with wife Camila, 37, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, the star finds inspiration and “immortality.” And, like parents everywhere these days, he also finds himself navigating a pandemic. This means manning remote schooling—the…
