Editor Well, it’s been a long wait to test the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera, and we can safely say, it’s a camera worth waiting for. The Animal AF, in particular, is incredible as it enables you to automatically track animals in action, such as active birds, as demonstrated above by Canon pro Robert Marc Lehmann. Not to mention its 45-megapixel full-frame sensor and 8K movie capabilities. We also got our hands on the new more affordable 20Mp R6 and it matches the R5’s specs with its Animal AF, plus both cameras will blast in bursts at 20fps, and have In-Body Image Stabilization for sharp shots, even when you’re shooting handheld in low light with slow shutter speeds. Verdicts on these game-changing cameras on page 72. We will also give you the…

a zoom with a view

Studio portraiture is one of the many core genres we like to cover in The Apprentice, but as social distancing was still in full effect when we wanted to arrange such a shoot, we had to think differently. We got in touch with Natasha J Bella, a Canon pro and model who’s recently started photo shoot sessions over the popular video-conferencing app Zoom. This enables her clients to take control of her tethered Canon EOS 90D camera using Canon EOS Utility 3 to take full control of the settings, focus and shooting – all remotely. We were eager to see how it all worked and arranged for our reader Yemi, a keen portrait photographer based in Essex, to be our Apprentice for the day and take studio quality shots of Natasha…

hot shot #1

NATASHA’S COMMENT To get started I wanted to show Yemi a simple setup to achieve a tight, elegant, headshot. For the background I used a white Colorama paper roll to compliment my white dress. I had set up one of my flashheads above me from the front pointing down at 45º and had a beauty dish attached to soften the spread of light. I also had a silver reflector below, also pointed toward me at 45º, to fill in shadows and stop the light looking too harsh. I had a second flash head pointed at the white background to make this was as bright and clean as possible and to make sure I stood out. PRO TIP USE A REFLECTOR A REFLECTOR offers maximum bang for your buck – they’re affordable and can even…
