The reality of the scale and magnitude of South Africa’s major water challenges as well as, in some cases, crises, vary in the specific type, frequency and magnitude and/or intensity.
The water challenges have been developing and intensifying over the past two to three decades, reaching an ever-increasing tipping point to ensure current and future water security.
Unfortunately, continued poor water governance and mismanagement, non-enforcement of legislation, poor or no planning, inaction and an entrenched culture of unaccountability and non-transparency have either created new water challenges in locations which have not had major water-related issues in the past, or have exacerbated the challenges into various water crises.
