I had forgotten, in the years I was away, how windy Cape Town gets in spring.
On Instagram and Twitter and Facebook, the country slides into summer in September, the dusty interior bakes, but in Cape Town, where the winter drags on for months, the only sign that the southern hemisphere is drifting towards the sun is the wind. The rain persists and each shower soothes my climate anxieties.
It’s been a gloriously wet winter, like they are supposed to be, like they were when I first moved here for university, and the dams are at 60% – not enough to scrap the water restrictions, but enough to ease them, to flush the piss smell out of the toilets, to allow myself…
