What We Did ... OPPOSITE: Create a custom color tint for one-of-a-kind glass vases. Mix 3 tablespoons of decoupage medium (we used Mod Podge) with 2¼ teaspoons of water and ¾ teaspoon of food coloring. Swirl the mixture inside the quilted glass jar until it’s covered. (For a waterproof version, use glass paint, such as Pebeo Vitrea 160 Glass Paint, instead.) Dry jar upside down on a rack set over wax paper to catch drips. Place on a cookie sheet and finish with 30 minutes in the oven at 200°F. The jar should now appear translucent. What we did ... THIS PHOTO: These glass displays give new meaning to the phrase “message in a bottle.” Cut photos to fit bottles. Use a foam crafts brush to coat the front of a photo with decoupage medium (we used Mod Podge in Gloss), then press it face down onto the outside of a bottle, smoothing out air bubbles with fingers. Let dry. Cluster bottles on a shelf or mantel. Write special messages on paper and drop inside a bottle or two. (We suspended ours with gold wires pushed into the cork toppers.) TIP: If using ink-jet copies, spray them with a few coats of clear matte acrylic fixative or several coats of clear polyurethane to keep photos from bleeding when glued. Found art BELOW: Create a custom wall hanging by uniting different pieces of metal into one stunning whole. Sand the edges of a piece of plywood (ours is 36×36 inches). Paint edges, overlapping the front edge about 1 inch. We cut squares and rectangles from vintage tin ceiling tiles, galvanized air ducts, and galvanized-tin roofing with tin snips and a metal abrasive blade fitted in a circular saw. Starting at one edge, overlap each piece by 1/4 inch into a design you like. Use a 1/8-inch drill bit to make holes in the corners of each piece and secure with 1/2-inch steel brads.
