The water levels of most of South Africa’s dams in mid-May were only marginally different from the levels of December last year. Only the Western Cape showed a drastic decrease in dam levels, as the rainy season was yet to start in that part of the country.
The Department of Water and Sanitation’s dam level report showed that average mid-May dam levels were: the Eastern Cape 72,2%, the Free State 53,5%, KwaZulu-Natal 50,9%, Limpopo 60,4%, Mpumalanga 63,2%, the Northern Cape 67,2%, North West 65,9%, and the Western Cape 30,7%.
Farmer’s Weekly reported in December 2015 that the equivalent dam levels were: the Eastern Cape 76,8%, the Free State 63%, KwaZulu-Natal 56%, Limpopo 68,1%, Mpumalanga 66,2%, the Northern Cape 69,2%, North West 49%, and the Western Cape 64,5%.
