In order to win the war against food insecurity in Africa, it was time to do things differently. This was according to Adeoluwa Adetunji, research and development technologist at AFGRI Animal Feeds, who was addressing delegates at the Agro-processing Africa Conference 2016 recently held at Irene Farm Estate in Centurion.
“Adopting a complementary action plan will assist in creating growth of agricultural activity [and] development of the agroprocessing sector, which [will enable] effective economic growth and lasting solutions to Africa’s food crisis,’’ said Adetunji.
Africa was over-dependent on cash crops such as maize, rice and wheat, which contributed about 60% to protein and calorie sources, he said. Instead, farmers should look at unlocking the potential of indigenous foods, such as bambara beans, locust beans, teff, marama, fonio, marula, and sorghum.…
