They say wisdom comes with age. The young are too immature to make wise and reasonable choices in life. They are too impulsive, irrational and hasty.
The old, on the other hand, have maturity, experience and hindsight behind them and usually make careful, well-reasoned decisions.
But age does not necessarily mean wisdom.
As the Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde said, “Sometimes age comes alone”.
Old people do make mistakes, some silly and some stupid. In the Shakespearean tragedy King Lear, the vain and eccentric old king leaves his kingdom to his two daughters, Goneril and Regan, because they had flattered him, but banishes the third, Cordelia, from his kingdom because she did not make a show of her love for him like her sisters.
