Bjørn Riis, best known as guitarist with Norwegian proggers Airbag, has announced the release of his fifth solo album. Fimbulvinter is out on April 11 via Karisma and is the first release under his own name since the EP, A Fleeting Glimpse, which came out at the tail end of 2022. Fimbulvinter is named after the long, hard winter that heralds Ragnarök in Norse mythology – a time of great destruction and the eventual rebirth of the world. In spring 1975, had you been in the vicinity of Radio Monte Carlo’s premises in Monaco, you might have seen Ian Anderson dismount his Ossa trials motorcycle and go inside. It was there, in a sprawling live room big enough to facilitate games of badminton between takes, that Jethro Tull recorded their eighth studio album, Minstrel In The Gallery, between May 15 and June 7. While Renaissance made Scheherazade And Other Stories at London’s Abbey Road and Mike Oldfield tracked Ommadawn in rural Herefordshire, Tull were getting it together in another country. It was the first time they’d recorded an LP outside the UK and they’d shipped the Maison Rouge Mobile Studio out to Monaco along with Anderson’s bike. Sel Balamir doesn’t really do ‘inspirations’, but a while ago Amplifier’s frontman came across an interview with Volodymyr Zelenskyy that struck a chord with him. The Ukrainian President was being interviewed by US historian Timothy Snyder, author of the book Freedom. “He asked the president how to describe freedom,” says Balamir. “This is a guy who has had to deal with so much shit over the last couple of years, who came from a background where he was not equipped to deal with that shit, but stepped up to what he felt his responsibilities were. When Einar Selvik founded Wardruna in 2003, they effectively existed in a scene of one. While by no means the first band to explore Scandinavian tradition, they helped popularise it to such an extent that subsequent Nordic folk acts such as Heilung, Nytt Land and Skáld can pop up anywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to Brixton Academy, ArcTanGent to Glastonbury. Formed by ex-members of UK prog outfit This Winter Machine with the addition of vocalist Charlie Bramald, Ghost Of The Machine released their debut album in 2022, the quasi-conceptual Scissorgames, to a positive critical response. With this follow-up, they’ve returned to some of the themes and a character introduced on that record, and explore questions of justice and the consequences of an individual wielding great power. “It utilises their influences in effective and affecting ways.” Straight off the bat they channel the sort of neo-prog influences that were apparent on their debut. Not so much a greatest hits as a celebration of an unmatched career. For a band built around musical precision, timing wasn’t always Rush’s strong point. In 2015, they played their farewell R40 Live Tour, despite it actually being 41 years since their debut album. Now comes this 50th-anniversary celebration, similarly a year overdue. Live And Natural finds Francis Dunnery’s It Bites back at KK’s Steel Mill in Wolverhampton, where they filmed their previous Blu-ray release, 2023’s Live From The Black Country. The setting may be the same, but Dunnery is surrounded by new faces. Only bassist Paul Brown remains from the previous incarnation of It Bites FD, joined by keyboardist Tony Turrell (a veteran of Fish’s band), guitarist Todd Edwards and Chad Wackerman on drums. TIBERIUS ENTER OUR video-call against a background of a simulated woodland amphitheatre and Prog wonders what we’ve let ourselves in for. The Scots released their debut album, A Peaceful Annihilation, in mid-2020 and didn’t have the easiest ride. However, once the world opened back up they made notable achievements, including festival slots at Radar and Euroblast, which has seen the cultivation of a dedicated fanbase. “At Radar Festival [in ’22] it felt like a lot of people were like, ‘Who the hell are these Tiberius guys?’ but the chatter afterward was really positive,” says guitarist Chris Foster. A CAMPFIRE CONVERSATION at the end of last year’s summer holiday ignited a musical spark for I Am The Manic Whale’s Michael Whiteman and his close friend, flautist Ella Lloyd, who has played on all the band’s albums. “We were sitting up really late looking at the stars and just chatting about music, when we had the idea that we could write some music together – just the two of us,” recalls Whiteman. Art-school alumni, one-time prog pop star, songwriter, video and filmmaker, environmentalist, Kevin Godley has, for decades, confounded expectations in pursuit of what might be called his vision (though he’d probably baulk at the idea of being a visionary). After two matchmaking albums, Randy McStine (Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson) and Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats) are returning with their third album as McStine & Minnemann – and the training wheels have come off for a “beautiful rock album”. US prog veterans Glass Hammer are set to return with their 22nd studio album when Rogue is released via Glass Hammer Media on April 11. And while the record tackles the weighty subject of mortality, the band’s founder Steve Babb says that the music is “definitely a little mellower than what we did with the sword-and-sorcery trilogy.” He continues, “Glass Hammer has always had this ability to reinvent itself. PENELOPE TRAPPES DOESN’T treat her music like a maths equation: nothing she does is calculated. Each song is written, performed and recorded in the moment, letting her emotions escape through her beautifully harrowing music with little regard for the rule book. THOSE WHO SAW them at last year’s Winter’s End, Prog For Peart or HRH Prog, may have wondered just where Tribe3 had landed from. “In terms of age we’re like Dad’s Army,” asserts founder, bassist and keyboardist Steve Hughes. His 60th birthday’s hoving into view and guitarist Chris Jones is already in his sixth decade, while drummer/vocalist Jon Kinsey is a mere 50-something. “All three of us do have a background in prog. Twenty minutes into his scheduled 9am Zoom interview with Prog, Ian Anderson has yet to appear. This is very unlike him and there is speculation about his whereabouts. Is he feeding his chickens? His pigs? Has he become absorbed in some music at his home studio? Of all the exceptional bands that emerged from Germany during the 1960s and 70s, none were more daring than Can. The pioneering group are now back in the public eye thanks to their ongoing series of archival live performances. They have also been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Soon Over Babaluma, the band’s first studio release following the departure of charismatic frontman Damo Suzuki in 1973. Vocals on Soon Over Babaluma were handled by Can’s guitarist, the late Michael Karoli, and keyboard player Irmin Schmidt.
