from the editor

When I first started as editor of Quilts & More™ magazine, a coworker told me “Welcome to magazine publishing, where every month is Christmas except December.” We shared a good chuckle, but I didn’t think much of it until the holiday projects and photo props started appearing around the office in the middle of spring. Our staff works so far ahead that I was planning next year’s projects as soon as the holidays ended. I’m not complaining; I love the most wonderful time of the year. Who doesn’t want more peace, hope, and joy—and presents—in their daily lives? Handmade presents are my favorites. There’s something so intentional about each gift—about how the person who made it dedicated that much thought and time into crafting something special just for the recipient. Each year…

one block three ways

TRUE BLUE In the classic fabric arrangement for the block, each of the four stars is easy to see. Fabrics are from the Pepino collection by Ana Sanfelippo for P&B Textiles (pbtex.com). Limiting the palette to two colors creates contrast between the background and stars. IN EVERY CORNER Using a darker print for the squares of the Flying Geese units draws the eye to the four corners of the block. Fabrics are from the Desertscapes collection by Artisan Batiks for Robert Kaufman Fabrics (robertkaufman.com). A secondary design of magenta squares emerges where the corners of the blocks meet. CENTER STAGE The center square of the block is a great spot for fussy cutting. It emphasizes the star formed in the center of the block, rather than the four stars in each corner. Fabrics are from the Sugarcreek…

sewing toolbox: marking tools

1. AIR-SOLUBLE PEN Best for quilting and embroidery designs. Air-soluble ink is meant to be easily seen and, later, easily removed. Warm temperatures can make the lines disappear quicker, and cold temperatures can sometimes make them reappear. 2. WATER-SOLUBLE PEN Best for quilting and embroidery designs. Similar to air-soluble ink, water-soluble ink is meant to be easily seen and removed. The need to use water to erase it can be tricky on larger projects and delicate fabrics. Ironing over marks can set them permanently into fabric. 3. PERMANENT MARKER Best for lines that will be hidden in seam allowances and for quilt labels. Ink from permanent markers will stay on fabric even after washing. 4. PLASTIC TOOL Best for straight lines and delicate fabrics. Plastic marking tools remove the risk of marks not disappearing from the fabric.…
