There’s a scene in the third season of American fantasy sitcom The Good Place that really sticks with me. Actor Ted Danson’s character, Michael, discusses the complexities of modern life. “These days just buying a tomato at a grocery store means that you are unwittingly supporting toxic pesticides, exploiting labour, contributing to global warming. Humans think that they’re making one choice, but they’re actually making dozens of choices they don’t even know they’re making,” he laments. In a time when it’s so easy to buy just about anything we wish at the click of a button, choosing our purchases wisely might not always come that easily.
